Human dental enamel, the hardest tissue in the body, plays a vital role in protecting teeth from wear as a result of daily grinding and chewing as well as from chemical attack. It is well established that the mechanical strength and fatigue resistance of dental enamel are derived from its hierarchical structure, which consists of periodically arranged bundles of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires. ...
The effect of Cu addition on the soft magnetic properties of FeZrSi amorphous alloy was investigated by X-ray analysis, TEM observation, and B-H curve tracer. As a melt-spun amorphous ribbon sample was annealed above the crystallization onset temperature, very fine ¡-Fe particles smaller than 315 nm were precipitated and uniformly distributed in an amorphous matrix. Cu addition to FeZrSi am...
Pressure-induced amorphous-to-amorphous configuration changes in Ca-Al metallic glasses (MGs) were studied by performing in-situ room-temperature high-pressure x-ray diffraction up to about 40 GPa. Changes in compressibility at about 18 GPa, 15.5 GPa and 7.5 GPa during compression are detected in Ca(80)Al(20), Ca(72.7)Al(27.3), and Ca(66.4)Al(33.6) MGs, respectively, whereas no clear change has...
Amorphous metals are interesting candidates for use as H(2) purification membranes and occur in some applications of H(2) storage. We introduce a general strategy combining density functional theory and statistical mechanics for quantitatively predicting the properties of interstitial H in amorphous metals. We systematically investigate H solubility in amorphous Fe(3)B, comparing our results wi...
The Mössbauer spectra of amorphous iron, prepared by using sonochemical methods, exhibit a broad magnetic hyperfine sextet at both 78 and 295 K. The spectra do not change with time if the amorphous iron is not exposed to oxygen or moisture. An analysis of the spectra with the method of Lines and Eibschütz yields average magnetic hyperfine fields of 29.1 and 25.9 T at 78 and 295 K, respectively....
The work presented here was motivated by the premise that the amorphous state serves as a medium to study cocrystal formation. The molecular mobility inherent to amorphous phases can lead to molecular associations between different components such that a single crystalline phase of multiple components or cocrystal is formed. Cocrystallization pathways and kinetics were investigated from amorpho...
The purpose of this study was to obtain an amorphous system with minimum unit operations that will prevent recrystallization of amorphous drugs since preparation, during processing (compression) and further storage. Amorphous celecoxib, solid dispersion (SD) of celecoxib with polyvinyl pyrrollidone (PVP) and co-precipitate with PVP and carrageenan (CAR) in different ratios were prepared by the ...
Since the discovery of the first metallic glass in 1960 (1), amorphous metals have been made in a variety of compositions. However, they have been largely fabricated as thin ribbons less than a millimeter in thickness because fast cooling rates (;10 K/sec) have been required to retain the metastable amorphous phase. Recently, however, a new class of amorphous metals has been developed which req...
We calculate statistical properties of amorphous polymer chains between crystalline lamellae by self-consistent field model simulations. In our model, an amorphous subchain is modelled as a polymer chain of which ends are grafted onto the crystal-amorphous interfaces. The crystal-amorphous interfaces are expressed as impenetrable surfaces. We incorporate the interaction between segments to sati...
Mechanical, optical, magnetic and electronic properties of amorphous materials hold great promise towards current and emergent technologies. We distinguish at least four categories of amorphous (glassy) materials: (i) metallic; (ii) thin films; (iii) organic and inorganic thermoplastics; and (iv) amorphous permanent networks. Some fundamental questions about the atomic arrangements remain unres...
