Coimmobilization of the freshwater microalga Chlorella vulgaris in alginate beads with the microalgae growth-promoting bacterium Azospirillum brasilense under semi-continuous synthetic wastewater culture conditions significantly increased the removal of ammonium and soluble phosphorus ions compared to immobilization of the microalgae alone. In continuous or batch cultures removal of these ions ...

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process is a promising novel option for removing nitrogen from wastewater. In this study it was shown that the Anammox process was inhibited reversibly by the presence of oxygen. Furthermore, aerobic nitrifiers were shown not to play an important role in the Anammox process.

Partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) has been one of the most innovative developments in biological wastewater treatment in recent years. With its discovery in the 1990s a completely new way of ammonium removal from wastewater became available. Over the past decade many technologies have been developed and studied for their applicability to the PN/A concept and several have made it into full-scal...

Simultaneous partial nitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation and denitrification (SNAD) system was applied to treat the opto-electronic industrial wastewater in a 2.5L sequencing batch reactor. The characteristics of wastewater were low C/N ratio (≈ 0.2) with 100mg-COD/L and 567 mg NH(4)(+)-N/L. The experiment was carried out over 8 months in six different stages, where nitrogen loading rat...

A hydroponic system was developed and used for purification of an anaerobically treated dairy manure and production of forage crops. The effect of light duration, seeding rate and wastewater application rate on the crop yield and pollution potential reduction were studied. The results indicated that a wheat forage crop can be produced in 21 days from germination to harvest in this system and re...

Phosphorus is a depleting resource that needs recovery from wastewater streams. The magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) crystallization process could simultaneously recover ammonium nitrogen and phosphorus at equal molar basis to yield slow-release MAP fertilizer. However, the present MAP processes are not efficient in recovering phosphorus at low P concentrations. This work presented and tested...

The effects of nitrogen oxides on anammox bacteria are not well known. Therefore, anammox bacteria were exposed to 3,500 ppm nitric oxide (NO) in the gas phase. The anammox bacteria were not inhibited by the high NO concentration but rather used it to oxidize additional ammonium to dinitrogen gas under conditions relevant to wastewater treatment.

An autonomous sensor for monitoring phosphate levels in aqueous samples has been developed. The sensor is based on the molybdenum yellow method for detection of phosphate, which involves the formation of a yellow-coloured compound when a phosphate-containing sample is mixed with an acidic reagent containing ammonium molybdate and ammonium metavanadate. The reaction is carried out in a microflui...

We sequenced the metagenome of a granular sludge in a nitritation/anammox bioreactor used for the treatment of ammonium-rich wastewater. Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Ignavibacteriae, and Acidobacteria were the predominant phyla in the studied bioreactor. Binning of contigs yielded a near-complete genome of the dominant anammox bacterium assigned to the candidate g...
