High-speed, gross, alpha autoradiographs can be made if silver-activated zinc sulfide is used as an intensifier in conjunction with high-speed film. The intensifier is interposed between the sample and film. This technique requires about 1/1000 of the exposure time required with Kodak NTB plates. The gross autoradiographs have greater contrast but slightly less resolution than conventional plates.
The Hoyle state plays a crucial role in the helium burning of stars heavier than our Sun and in the production of carbon and other elements necessary for life. This excited state of the carbon-12 nucleus was postulated by Hoyle as a necessary ingredient for the fusion of three alpha particles to produce carbon at stellar temperatures. Although the Hoyle state was seen experimentally more than a...
2014 The molecule H2CN+-N2 has been observed in a mixture of N2-CH4 irradiated by alpha particles from a radioactive source. The equilibrium constant has been measured and the enthalpy of the reaction has been calculated (| 0394H0| = 7.65 ± 0.09 kcal . mole1). J. Cellulose nitrate films (commercially available as LR 115 films were irradiated systematically with alpha particles in the energy range from 1 to 5 MeV with incident angles from 30◦ to 90◦. After etching to remove a thickness of 6.5 m, the lengths of the major and minor axes of the alpha-particle track openings in the films were measured with an image analyser under an optical magnification of ...
In determining the etched track rate in solid-state nuclear track detectors, track lengths should be determined accurately. A method based on surface profilometry is proposed to determine the track lengths in CR-39 detectors through measurements of their replicas. Tracks from alpha particles with an incident energy of 4 MeV have been chosen to demonstrate the method. After irradiation and chemi...
We investigated the relationship between nuclear hits by alpha particles and the subsequent occurrence of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in normal human diploid lung fibroblasts (HFL1). Cells were exposed to 238Pu alpha particles at doses ranging from 0.4-12.9 cGy and subsequently analyzed for SCEs. A significant increase in SCE frequency was observed even at the lowest dose examined. The ex...
