Acute myeloid leukemia is a clonal neoplasm derived from myeloid progenitor cells with a varying outcome. The initial goal of treatment is the achievement of complete remission, defined for over 40 years by morphology. However, without additional post-remission treatment the majority of patients relapse. In many cases of acute myeloid leukemia, allogeneic stem cell transplantation offers the be...

Blinatumomab, a bispecific T-cell engager monoclonal antibody used to manage Philadelphia chromosome-negative relapsed or refractory B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be used to treat patients by inducing graft versus leukemia reaction post allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, a feature which it was post allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, a feature whic...

Acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (M7 AML) is a highly aggressive disease. We evaluated outcomes in 57 children (11 with Down syndrome) and 69 adults with M7 AML after first complete remission (CR1) following autologous or HLA-identical allogeneic transplantation. Characteristics of the recipients of autologous transplants (38 children, 37 adults) were, respectively: median age, 1.7 and 46 years;...

Toxoplasma encephalitis is a well recognized complication of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, solid organ transplantation, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, patients with hematologic malignancies not treated with allogeneic HSCT may also develop this condition, which requires high clinical suspicion and consideration for prophylactic therapy.

Whole tumor cell-based vaccines administered within the first 2 to 3 months after allogeneic stem cell transplantation stand out as a promising approach to enhance graft-vs.-leukemia responses. Herein, the implications of this finding for the development of strategies to improve the outcome of patients subjected to allogeneic stem cell transplantation are discussed.

BACKGROUND Patients who undergo allogeneic stem cell transplantation and subsequent radiation therapy uncommonly develop graft-versus-host disease within the irradiated area. We quantified the incidence of this complication, which is a novel contribution to the field. From 2010 to 2014, 1849 patients underwent allogeneic stem cell transplantation, and 41 (2 %) received radiation therapy afterwa...

DNA methylation and other epigenetic phenomena appear to be relevant in the pathogenesis of several malignant disorders. DNA methyltransferases add methyl groups to cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) islandsleading to gene promoter silencing. The DNA methyltransferases inhibitors azacitidine and decitabine have anti-tumor activity against a broad range of malignancies, but have been investigated ...

BACKGROUND We investigated whether differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) in ischemic myocardium enhances their immunogenicity, thereby increasing their chance for rejection. METHODS AND RESULTS In one series, 129/SvJ-derived mouse ESCs (ES-D3 line) were transplanted by direct myocardial injection (1 x 10(6) cells) into murine hearts of both allogeneic (BALB/c, n=20) and syngeneic (12...

" 1(p61) It is true that the presented event-free survival estimates for both the allogeneic BMT and chemotherapy groups receiving intensively timed induction therapy exceeded 50% (66% and 53%, respectively); this statement is misleading, howev...

introduction: despite achievement to complete remission (cr) with current treatments and new multiple chemotherapeutic agents in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (all) patients, the majority of them still relapse during long-term follow-up. the use of post- remission therapy will reduce early relapse in these cases, but the best option is still debatable. patients and methods: in this retrospective...
