BACKGROUND The purpose of the present study was to determine pathogens and behaviors associated with nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and the usefulness of the urethral smear in predicting the presence of pathogens. METHODS We conducted a case-control study of men with and without symptoms of NGU. Sexual practices were measured by questionnaire. First-stream urine was tested for Chlamydia trach...
Human fecal matter contains a large number of viruses, and current bacterial indicators used for monitoring water quality do not correlate with the presence of pathogenic viruses. Adenoviruses and enteroviruses have often been used to identify fecal pollution in the environment; however, other viruses shed in fecal matter may more accurately detect fecal pollution. The purpose of this study was...
Enteric adenovirus type 40 (Ad40) and Ad41 form the sixth subgenus of human adenoviruses. They are associated with infantile diarrhea but cannot be isolated in conventional cell cultures. The genome of the fastidious enteric Ad41 has been cloned, and the cleavage sites of the genome produced by restriction endonucleases BamHI, EcoRI, HpaI, NruI, PvuI, and SalI have been mapped. To develop usefu...
HAdVD23 and two novel adenoviruses, HAdVD60a and HAdVD62, isolated from feces of AIDS patients in Manchester, United Kingdom, have been sequenced. The HAdVD60a genome lacks the penton arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) motif and differs from HAdVD60 by a recombinant E3 region. HAdVD62 has penton, hexon, and fiber regions not previously found in other adenoviruses.
Many immuno-therapeutic strategies are currently being developed to fight cancer. In this scenario, oncolytic adenoviruses (Onc.Ads) have an interesting role for their peculiar tumor selectivity, safety, and transgene-delivery capability. The major strength of the Onc.Ads is extraordinary immunogenicity that leads a strong T-cell response, which, together with possibility delivery therapeutic t...
The strains of types 1 to 4 adenoviruses studied attained maximum combination with host cells, strain HeLa, in 5 to 6 hours. During this adsorption period approximately 75 per cent of the total virus became associated with the host cells. Following adsorption of virus to HeLa cells, these agents underwent cyclic multiplication periods similar to bacterial and other animal viruses. The latent or...
