Although numerous articles have appeared in the literature on chronic isodense subdural hematomas, acute isodense subdural hematomas have received little attention. An experimental model was developed that demonstrated that blood with reduced hemoglobin concentration, 8-10 g/dl, is isodense with the brain. Two anemic patients with acute isodense subdural hematomas are reported.
BACKGROUND Traumatic acute subdural hematoma has a high mortality despite intensive treatment. Despite the existence of several prediction models, it is very hard to predict an outcome. We investigated whether a specific combination of initial head CT-scan findings is a factor in predicting outcome, especially non-survival. METHODS We retrospectively studied admission head CT scans of all adu...
Dural metastasis from primary gastric adenocarcinoma has been rarely reported, and its prognosis is very poor because it frequently leads to acute subdural hematoma. Here, we describe a case with sequential spinal and cranial dural metastases from gastric adenocarcinoma without subdural hematoma. A 43-year-old woman with gastric adenocarcinoma and well-controlled peritoneal carcinomatosis prese...
A 24-year-old man was brought to the emergency room after a beating to the head with a baseball bat. At the time of admission he was noted to have a di lated right pupil and abnormal extensor responses bilaterally. The initial CT scan revea led a large, right, acute, subdural hematoma with appropriate right-to-Ieft sh ift of the midline structures (fig . 1 A) . He underwent a decompressive cran...
Subdural hematoma (SDH) is a rare complication of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) the incidence being around 2%. Although SDH usually occurs secondary to trauma, in bleeding disorders it may occur spontaneously. Here we report subdural hematoma in two uncommon settings, one patient with systemic sclerosis developing secondary ITP and consequently subdural hematoma and the other patient wi...
Spontaneous resolution of post-traumatic chronic subdural hematoma is a very rare and unexpected event. It has been rarely reported in the literature, mostly cases of chronic subdural hematoma resolution in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Operative procedure is generally considered the treatment of choice for chronic subdural hematoma. We present a rare case, which did not require an open ...
Traumatic subdural hematomas of the posterior fossa are rare but dangerous neurosurgical emergencies that require prompt diagnosis and management to avoid the uniformly poor outcome. We present a case of a teenager with severe TBI and acute subdural hematoma of the posterior fossa that deteriorated rapidly before surgery but eventually made a good recovery. We also the review the literature con...
BACKGROUND Delayed epidural hematoma (DEH) following evacuation of traumatic acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) or acute epidural hematoma (EDH) is a rare but devastating complication, especially when it occurs sequentially in a single patient. CASE PRESENTATION A 19-year-old man who developed contralateral DEH following craniotomy for evacuation of a traumatic right-side ASDH and then developed ...
Management of Patients Presenting with Acute Subdural Hematoma due to Ruptured Intracranial Aneurysm
Acute subdural hematoma is a rare presentation of ruptured aneurysms. The rarity of the disease makes it difficult to establish reliable clinical guidelines. Many patients present comatose and differential diagnosis is complicated due to aneurysm rupture results in or mimics traumatic brain injury. Fast decision-making is required to treat this life-threatening condition. Determining initial di...
