The existence of acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase in rat brain cytosol is reported. The coupling of this enzyme with cytosolic acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase can provide acetyl-CoA for lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis without the need for mitochondrial participation.
