BACKGROUND Lethality of suicidal attempt provides useful information regarding the behavior. There is a perceived need for a clinically useful scale that can be easily adapted to various methods and circumstances of attempt. AIMS The study intended to develop and test utility of a scale for measuring lethality that can reflect overall clinical observation taking into account various indicator...

The motivation of one hundred cases of suicide attempters was assessed clinically depending purely on their subjective reports. They were grouped into two, viz., those who primarily wished for a change (here in after called WC) and those who unambiguously wished to die (hereinafter called WD). They were compared with regard to the details of the attempt, methods of attempt, psychiatric and soci...

Mutations in MCOLN1, which encodes the cation channel protein TRPML1, result in the neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder Mucolipidosis type IV. Mucolipidosis type IV patients show lysosomal dysfunction in many tissues and neuronal cell death. The ortholog of TRPML1 in Caenorhabditis elegans is CUP-5; loss of CUP-5 results in lysosomal dysfunction in many tissues and death of developing ...

The relatively short life cycles of harpacticoid copepods makes them appropriate animals for use in tests that rapidly assess the acute, sublethal, or chronic effects of sediment contaminants. In this study, four harpacticoid copepod species (Nitocra spinipes, Tisbe tenuimana, Robertgurneya hopkinsi, and Halectinosoma sp.) were isolated from clean marine sediments, and procedures for laboratory...

Inhibition of DNA replication in an Escherichia coli dnaB-22 mutant failed to block quinolone-mediated lethality. Inhibition of protein synthesis by chloramphenicol inhibited nalidixic acid lethality and, to a lesser extent, ciprofloxacin lethality in both dnaB-22 and wild-type cells. Thus, major features of quinolone-mediated lethality do not depend on ongoing replication.

We have produced a line of transgenic mice that is characterized by prenatal lethality. These mice bear a chimeric plasmid containing the long terminal repeat of the Rous sarcoma virus linked to the coding region of the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene (pRSV-CAT). Mice heterozygous for the pRSV-CAT integration site are semisterile, producing litters approximately equal to 40% of the avera...

Using deficiencies from Drosophila melanogaster, we looked for genomic regions in the sister species D. simulans that could cause lethality when hemizygous on a hybrid genetic background. Such genotypes allow hemizygous genes from one species to interact with heterozygous genes from other species and may correspond to the kinds of genotypes causing Haldane's rule, the observation that if only o...

The LD 50 in mice of intact virus-like particles (VLP) from Penicillium stololllferum NRRL 5267 was greater than 240 mg/kg body weight, and their component double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA) was 34·0 mg/kg. Judged by decreases in LD50 values, administration of sublethal amounts of actinomycin D or cycloheximide simultaneously with sublethal amounts of intact VLP or mycoviral dsRNA enhance...

UNLABELLED Ionizing radiation (IR) is a key therapeutic regimen for many head and neck cancers (HNC). However, the 5-year overall survival rate for locally advanced HNCs is approximately 50% and better therapeutic efficacy is needed. NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is overexpressed in many cancers, and β-lapachone (β-lap), a unique NQO1 bioactivatable drug, exploits this enzyme to rel...

The activity of an ethanolic rhizome extract of Artemisia vulgaris against hatching, mortality, host plant infectivity, and galling of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne megadora was investigated. The extract inhibited egg hatch (50% inhibition by 2.35mg/ml) and caused second-stage juvenile mortality (50% lethality at 12 hours' exposure to 55.67 mg/ml), both in a dose-dependent manner. Nematode...
