The aim of this study was to characterize Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19A isolates causing invasive pneumococcal disease in children, collected in Argentina between 1993 and 2014. A total of 176 isolates serotype 19A were analyzed. There was an increase in the proportion of serotype 19A isolates from 3% in 1993 to 6% in 2011, prior to the introduction of PCV13 in 2012, and from 2012 to 20...

Gamma interferon (IFN gamma) impairs epithelial barrier function and induces HLA-DR expression on colonic cancer cell lines. Salicylates have been shown to reduce IFN gamma induced HLA-DR expression. The effect of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) on IFN gamma induced changes in transepithelial resistance and permeability was investigated in HT29 clone 19A and Caco 2 monolayers. Monolayers were inc...

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been proposed as a useful cancer treatment option after showing higher induction of cell death in cancer cells than in normal cells. Although a few studies have contributed to elucidating the molecular mechanism by which CAP differentially inhibits cancer cell proliferation, no results are yet to be reported related to microRNA (miR). In this study, miR-19a-3p ...

Mechanical stimulation regulates endothelial cell (EC) functions through the modulation of signaling networks and gene expression. Our recent studies have identified that shear stress regulation of microRNAs (miRs)-19a, 23b and 27b, led to the modulation of EC proliferation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms by which shear stress regulates these miRs have not been explored. Previous ...

BACKGROUND Protection against disease or colonization from serotypes related to those in pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (i.e. cross-protection) vary by serotype; the basis for this variation is not understood. The 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) replaced 7-valent conjugate (PCV7) in the USA in 2010 allowing assessment of PCV7 and PCV13 immunogenicity and functional cross-prote...

Of 393 isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae from U.S. children collected in 2005-2006, nonvaccine serotypes accounted for 89.1%, with serotype 19A the most prevalent, representing 30.5% of all isolates. The MIC(90) of faropenem against serotype 19A isolates was 1 mug/ml, compared to > or =8 microg/ml against amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefdinir, cefuroxime axetil, and azithromycin.

BACKGROUND Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) are in the process of implementation in Latin America. Experience in developed countries has shown that they reduce the incidence of invasive and non-invasive disease. However, there is evidence that the introduction of PCVs in universal mass vaccination programs, combined with inappropriate and extensive use of antibiotics, could be associated ...

The miR-17-92 cluster encodes 7 miRNAs inside a single polycistronic transcript, and is known as a group of oncogenic miRNAs that contribute to tumorigenesis in several cancers. However, their direct targets remain unclear, and it has been suggested that a single miRNA is capable of reducing the production of hundreds of proteins. The majority of reports on the identification of miRNA targets a...

We present here the draft genome sequence of ITALIC! Streptococcus pneumoniaestrain MTY32702340SN814 isolated in Monterrey, Mexico, from a girl with bacterial meningitis. The strain belongs to the atypical and multidrug-resistant serogroup 19A. This is the first report in the literature of sequence type 3936 (ST3936) in ITALIC! S. pneumoniaeserotype 19A.

BACKGROUND This study presents an analysis of 159 serotype 19A isolates from IPD in children before and after the general recommendation for childhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccination in Germany in July 2006. Vaccination formulations used were PCV7, PCV10 (from April 2009) and PCV13 (from Dec. 2009, replacing PCV7). METHODS Isolates from invasive pneumococcal disease in children were seroty...
