The anemia of sickle cell disease is associated with a severe inflammatory vasculopathy and endothelial dysfunction, which leads to painful and life-threatening clinical complications. Growing evidence supports the anti-inflammatory properties of ω-3 fatty acids in clinical models of endothelial dysfunction. Promising but limited studies show potential therapeutic effects of ω-3 fatty acid supp...

Clinically, excessive ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and inadequate ω-3 PUFA have been associated with enhanced risks for developing ulcerative colitis. In rodent models, ω-3 PUFAs have been shown to either attenuate or exacerbate colitis in different studies. We hypothesized that a high ω-6: ω-3 PUFA ratio would increase colitis susceptibility through the microbe-immunity nexus. To addr...

The thermo-hydraulic behavior of the air flow over a two dimensional ribbed channel wasnumerically investigated in various rib-width ratio configurations (B/H=0.5-1.75) atdifferent Reynolds numbers, ranging from 6000 to 18000. The capability of differentturbulence models, including standard k-ε, RNG k-ε, standard k-ω, and SST k-ω, inpredicting the heat transfer rate was compared with the experi...

For a flat universe presently dominated by static or dynamic vacuum energy, cosmological constant (LCDM) or quintessence (QCDM), we calculate the asymp-totic collapsed mass fraction as function of the present ratio of smooth energy to matter energy R 0 = (1 − Ω m0)/Ω m0. Identifying these collapsed fractions as anthropic probabilities, we find the observed present ratio R 0 ∼ 2 to be likely in ...

The available data on ω and φ production from πN and pp collisions are reanalyzed with respect to an OZI rule violation on the basis of transition matrix elements. The data are found to be compatible with a constant ratio R up to excess energies ǫ≈300 MeV, however, the ratio R deviates substantially from the SU(3) prediction based on the present knowledge of the φ − ω mixing angle.

the aim of the present study was to assess the effect of slaughter and carcass weight, age at slaughter and sex on the fatty acid profile of the greek boutsiko sheep breed. twenty lambs (ten females and ten males) were examined. the lambs were slaughtered at the age of 48 days. carcasses were chopped in nine specific cuts and a random sample of 100 g was taken from each cut, with a total of 180...

We study the dynamical evolution of a satellite (of mass M) orbiting around a companion spherical galaxy. The satellite is subject to a back-reaction force F∆ resulting from the density fluctuations excited in the primary stellar system. We evaluate this force using the linear response theory developed in Colpi and Pallavicini (1997). F∆ is computed in the reference frame comoving with the prim...

BACKGROUND & AIMS Nutritional supplementation with polyunsaturated fatty acids is important in preterm infants neurodevelopment, but it is not known if the omega-6/omega-3 ratio affects this process. This study was designed to determine the effects of a balanced contribution of arachidonic acid in very preterm newborns fed with formula milk. METHODS This was a randomized trial, in which newbo...

Malignant gliomas are the most common adult brain cancers. In spite of aggressive treatment, recurrence occurs in the great majority of patients and is invariably fatal. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are abundant in brain, particularly ω-6 arachidonic acid (AA) and ω-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Although the levels of ω-6 and ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are tightly regulated in brain, the ω-...
