During observations with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer from 1997 June 31 to July 3 we discovered two simultaneous kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) near 500 and 860 Hz in the low-mass X-ray binary and Z source Cygnus X-2. In the X-ray color-color diagram and hardness-intensity diagram (HID), a clear Z track was traced out, which shifted in the HID within 1 day to higher count rates at th...

We compare the ratio of the strong coupling Q, measured in Z” --) b8 events to that measured in Z” -+ qq (q=u,d,a,c) in the SLD experiment at SLAC. Z” -* b6 events are identified with the aid of a precision silicon vertex detector by requiring that at least thiee charged tracks pass more than 3.017 from the Z” decay vertex. This method has an estimated efficieticy of 54% with a purity of 71%. J...

A novel fast human vision adapted 3D visualization engine is described. In accordance with the human vision peculiarities (asymmetry between left-right and up-down oppositions, dependence of the spatial resolution on the velocity, etc.), we use the cylindrical coordinate system whose axis coincides with the symmetry axis of an observer, and implement the different rendering regimes for moving a...

[1] The impact of radar data on the analysis and prediction of the structure, intensity, and track of landfalling Hurricane Ike (2008), at a cloud-resolving resolution, is examined. Radial velocity (Vr) and reflectivity (Z) data from coastal radars are assimilated over a 6-h period before Ike landfall, using the ARPS 3DVAR and cloud analysis package through 30-min assimilation cycles. Eighteen-...

BACKGROUND Growth-curves are an important tool for evaluating the anthropometric development in pediatrics. The different growth-curves available are based in different populations, what leads to different cut-offs. Pediatric obesity tracks into adulthood and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The accurate assessment of a child nutritional status using growth-curves can indicate ...

OBJECTIVE Understanding dietary tracking may help to inform interventions to improve dietary intakes and health outcomes. This study investigated how a dietary pattern (DP) associated with increased adiposity in childhood tracked from 7 to 13 years of age, in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). DESIGN AND METHODS Three-day food diaries were collected at 7, 10 and 13 ...

submitted to the Xth VCI 2004 30 November 2003 This BaBar L1 DCT upgrade is essential for improving L1 trigger background rejection in preparation for the expected increase in PEP-II luminosity. A large fraction of the current L1 trigger background come from interactions of beam particles with beam line components at ∼ ±20 cm from the interaction point (IP), along the beam direction (z axis). We present measurements of fragmentation cross sections of relativistic nuclei and upper limits for the production probability of nuclear fragments with fractional charge using CR39 nuclear track detectors and an automated scanning system. The measurements of the total and partial charge changing fragmentation cross sections concern 16 GeV/nucleon oxygen ions, 14.5 GeV/nucleon silicon ions and ...

It is proposed that the “threshold for etchable track formation” in plastics is associated with the linear density of activated polymeric clusters along the path of an ion, in the “grain-count regime.” Existing data for CR-39 reveal a change in etching rate in the neighborhood of z/β having the value of about 15-20. We infer that this defines the transition from the grain count regime to the tr...

We present results of a detailed study of X-ray flaring in the Z-track source Sco X-1 in a highly superEddington state made using high quality Rossi-XTE data from the PCA and HEXTE instruments. The emission model successfully used to explain the dipping LMXB, and other classes of LMXB in recent years, was applied to study the physical evolution along the Z-track which remains a major problem. T...
