We verify and examine criticality in a 1000 bus network with an AC blackout model that represents many of the interactions that occur in cascading failure. At the critical loading there is a sharp rise in the mean b l a c k out size and a power law probability distr ibution of blackout size that indicates a s i g n i f i cant risk of large blackouts.
This paper describes the latest developments in the wide area monitoring of electrical power grids, based on IEEE C37.118.1-2011 synchrophasor measurements. It outlines the fundamentals of synchrophasor systems, and focuses on the latest technological advancements and practical applications deployed in the existing and emerging power grids. With the emphasis on higher utilization of power syste...
A model has been developed to study the global complex dynamics of a series of blackouts in power transmission systems [1, 2]. This model has included a simple level of self-organization by incorporating the growth of power demand and the engineering response to system failures. Two types of blackouts have been identified with different dynamical properties. One type of blackout involves loss o...
Cascading failures in large-scale electric power transmission systems are an important cause of blackouts. Analysis of North American blackout data has revealed power law (algebraic) tails in the blackout size probability distribution which suggests a dynamical origin. With this observation as motivation, we examine cascading failure in a simplified transmission system model as load power deman...
This study examined the proposition that the experience of alcoholic blackouts is related to other indices of cerebral involvement in the alcoholic process. In particular it was suggested that those who experience alcoholic blackouts would also show signs of the effects of alcoholic damage in the form of lower scores on cognitive functions vulnerable to the effects of long-term alcohol abuse. W...
As power systems become more and more interconnected, the inter-area oscillations has become a serious factor limiting large power transfer among different areas. Underdamped (Undamped) inter-area oscillations may cause system breakup and even lead to large-scale blackout. Traditional damping controllers include Power System Stabilizer (PSS) and Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controlle...
We present Robin, an attack-resilient microblogging service, designed to provide citizens of an oppressive regime, the ability to disseminate messages during periods of complete communication blackouts imposed by the government. Using a delaytolerant network comprised solely of smart-phones, messages are relayed opportunistically among citizens. Our key contribution is a novel mechanism to prot...
