The mass spectrum and the mixing of fundamental fermions are the most important unsolved problems of the particle physics. According to the Standard Model (SM), these masses and mixings arise from the interaction with the Higgs doublet via spontaneous symmetry breaking. In the framework of SM, fermions with the same quantum numbers (electric charge, weak isospin, etc.) are indistinguishable bef...
Various mechanisms are often used to explain the interaction between electron donors and acceptors. Commonly proposed mechanisms are those in which the acceptor interacts with the aromatic pi-systems in the donor molecule or the acceptor forms a weak interaction of the Lewis acid with Lewis base type. In this study, the above mechanisms were examined as well as other possible mechanisms. Promet...
The proposed experimental program (CLEO-c) for a charm factory based on a modification of the Cornell Electron Storage Ring is summarized. The prospects for R measurements over the range 3 GeV ≤ √ s ≤ 7 GeV are examined in detail. The CLEO collaboration is proposing a focused three-year program of charm and QCD physics with the CLEO detector operating in the range √ s = 3 − 5 GeV. The CLEO-c ph...
I discuss two of Edward Teller's contributions to nuclear physics, the introduction of the Gamow-Teller operator in β decay and the formulation of the Goldhaber-Teller model for electric dipole transitions, in the context of efforts to understand the weak interaction and the nature of the neutrino.
We consider a two-dimensional pulse-coupled array of noisy threshold elements with a long-range interaction. For tight coupling, we observe the formation of spatio-temporal excitation waves, such as target and spiral waves. For weak coupling, we find noise sustained spiral growth, where the noise level controls the scale of the spiral. (c) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
Possibilities of precision weak-interaction measurements in relativistic hydrogenic ions are considered. It is shown that using high-energy ion storage rings (RHIC, SPS, LHC), and utilizing relativistic Doppler tuning and laser cooling, it is possible to achieve sensitivity necessary for testing physics beyond the Standard Model.
We explore how chiral-symmetry constraints on weak-interaction matrix elements suggest the existence of an intermediate-state σ in several different weak-interaction processes. Particular attention is directed toward recent evidence for a σ within three-body nonleptonic weak decays. The existence of a broad scalar-isoscalar ππ resonance near 500-600 MeV, the σ, has long been controversial. Afte...

Solvation plays an important role in ligand-protein association and has a strong impact on comparisons of binding energies for dissimilar molecules. When databases of such molecules are screened for complementarity to receptors of known structure, as often occurs in structure-based inhibitor discovery, failure to consider ligand solvation often leads to putative ligands that are too highly char...
