A series of experimental observation are presented a dual-wavelike instability in vortex rings. The first one is presented at Reynolds number range between 600 and 1000 for circular vortex ring and the second one could be observed in radiant-symmetric vortex rings, azimuthal number n ≥ 2, at least covers the Reynolds number from 275 to 1000. The azimuthal number of the first instability depends...

A method is presented whereby the translational velocity of a vortex ring can be approximated from the total circulation, impulse, and kinetic energy of the vortex system. Assuming a uniform vorticity density, these bulk quantities define a unique stable vortex ring configuration, and the translational velocity can be inferred from this configuration and the system scaling. Here, the accuracy o...

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is used to study chemically reacting, laminar vortex rings. A novel, all–Mach number algorithm developed by Doom, Hou, & Mahesh [1] is used. The chemical mechanism is a nine species, nineteen reaction mechanism for H2/air combustion proposed by Mueller et al. [2]. Diluted H2 at ambient temperature (300 K) is injected into hot air. The simulations study the effe...

Direct numerical simulation is used to study the mixing of a passive scalar by a vortex ring issuing from a nozzle into stationary fluid. The ‘formation number’ (Gharib et al. J. Fluid Mech. vol. 360, 1998, p. 121), is found to be 3.6. Simulations are performed for a range of stroke ratios (ratio of stroke length to nozzle exit diameter) encompassing the formation number, and the effect of stro...

It is known that vortex rings formed by large stroke ratios ~in a piston/cylinder arrangement! pinch off from their generating jets at a fairly constant universal time scale. In this paper we show that the hypothesis that at the pinch off the translational velocity of the ring equals the jet flow velocity near the ring is equivalent to the recently proposed idea based on a variational principle...

We study vortex knotting in the Faddeev-Skyrme model. Starting with a straight vortex line twisted around its axis we follow its evolution under dissipative energy minimization dynamics. With low twist per unit length the vortex forms a helical coil, but with higher twist numbers the vortex becomes knotted or a ring is formed around the vortex. A particle method is presented for computing vortex sheet motion in three-dimensional flow. The particles representing the sheet are advected by a regularized Biot– Savart integral in which the exact singular kernel is replaced by the Rosenhead– Moore kernel. New particles are inserted to maintain resolution as the sheet rolls up. The particle velocities are evaluated by an adaptive treecode al...

In this paper we determine the velocity, the energy, and estimate writhe and twist helicity contributions of vortex filaments in the shape of torus knots and unknots (as toroidal and poloidal coils) in a perfect fluid. Calculations are performed by numerical integration of the Biot-Savart law. Vortex complexity is parametrized by the winding number w given by the ratio of the number of meridian...

The effects of Reynolds and Womersley numbers on the hemodynamics of two simplified intracranial aneurysms (IAs), that is, sidewall and bifurcation IAs, and a patient-specific IA are investigated using computational fluid dynamics. For this purpose, we carried out three numerical experiments for each IA with various Reynolds (Re = 145.45 to 378.79) and Womersley (Wo = 7.4 to 9.96) numbers. Alth...

In contrast to an infinite degree of nonlocality, we demonstrate that vortex solitons in nonlinear media under competing self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlocal nonlinearities can be stabilized with a finite degree of nonlocality. Stable vortex solitons in the upper branch, bifurcated from the competing cubic-quintic nonlinearities, are found to be supported when the original d...
