Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) possess unique sensory organs, the facial pits, capable of sensing subtle fluctuations in thermal radiation. Prey acquisition has long been regarded as the sole function of the facial pits. However, the ability to sense thermal radiation could also direct thermoregulatory behavior by remotely sensing nearby surface temperatures. Using a series of behavioral are...

Lip pits are a rare congenital anomaly that presents on the upper or lower lip or the commissure of the lips. Lip pits are an autosomal dominant trait occurring almost always in association with cleft lip or palate. They most commonly occur in association with developmental disturbances such as Van der Woude's syndrome, popliteal pterygium syndrome, oro-facial-digital syndrome, Marres-Cremers s...

There is a series of pits in the scales of the rostrum and posterior portion of the lower lips in some pythons and boas. In the Australian python Morelia spilotes, these pits are innervated by the maxillary and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. Structural and neurophysiological evidence indicate that in the pits there are receptors that function as detectors of radiant heat flux.

The locally deepest regions of major sulci, the sulcal pits, are thought to be the first cortical folds to develop and are closely related to functional areas. We examined the spatial distribution of sulcal pits across the entire cortical region, and assessed the hemispheric asymmetry in their frequency and distribution in a large group of normal adult brains. We automatically extracted sulcal ...

Interactions amongst localized corrosion sites were investigated using multi-electrode arrays. The 5x20 array consisted of one hundred 250 μm AISI 316 stainless steel wires configured into a close packed rectangle. Experiments were conducted in 0.05 M NaCl to investigate interactions triggered by the presence of active pits. Interactions between primary pits and the adjacent electrode surface w...

Nanosecond laser-resistance to dielectric multilayer coatings on substrate pits was examined with respect to the electric-field (E-field) enhancement and mechanical properties. The laser-induced damage sensitivity to the shape of the substrate pits has not been directly investigated through experiments, thus preventing clear understanding of the damage mechanism of substrate pits. We performed ...

Ten probands with tuberous sclerosis (TS) and 20 first degree relatives were examined for evidence of pitted enamel hypoplasia; 100% of TS patients had pitting, compared to 65% of relatives and 72% of 25 controls. We found that 70% of TS cases had more than 14 pits per person compared with only 5% of relatives and 4% of controls; 85% of relatives and 84% of controls had fewer than six pits per ...

A time-efficient surface grinding and polishing procedure was developed to remove noise pitting associated with the etching of CR-39. CR-39 is a solid-state nuclear track detector used to measure and analyze ions produced by fusion implosions on the OMEGA and OMEGA EP laser systems. Using CR-39 thickness measurements acquired during the grinding process, surface removal rates of 68 µm/min and 5...
