Postoperative thrombotic complications increase hospital length of stay and health care costs. Given the potential for thrombotic complications to result from hypercoagulable states, we sought to determine whether postoperative blood analysis using thromboelastography could predict the occurrence of thrombotic complications, including myocardial infarction (MI). We prospectively enrolled 240 pa...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Livedo reticularis racemosa and cerebrovascular lesions characterize Sneddon's syndrome. We report 23 patients with livedo racemosa and describe the association with thrombotic events. Our objective was to determine whether livedo racemosa may be an independent clinical marker for the development of thrombotic events in patients who test negative for anti-phospholipid a...

The case of a patient admitted with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura nine years after developing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is reported. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura associated with SLE has been described on other occasions, but in most patients the diagnosis of SLE precedes that of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. The unusual sequence and the chronological separation of t...

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is an uncommon condition induced by thrombotic or non-thrombotic obstruction of hepatic venous outflow. BCS most often occurs in patients with underlying thrombotic diathesis, including such myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs) as polycythemia vera and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and pregnancy, oral contraceptives, tumors, chronic inflammatory diseases, clotti...

This report describes a patient who developed cyclosporin-induced thrombotic microangiopathy in a renal allograft. Cyclosporin-induced thrombotic microangiopathy is considered by many as a contraindication to subsequent therapy with cyclosporin. This case is notable for successful treatment with cyclosporin following resolution of thrombotic microangiopathy in a renal allograft.

BACKGROUND Post-thrombotic syndrome varies from mild oedema to incapacitating swelling with pain and ulceration. We investigated the rate of post-thrombotic syndrome after a first episode of deep-vein thrombosis and assessed the preventive effect of direct application of a sized-to-fit graded compression stocking. METHODS Patients with a first episode of venogram-proven proximal deep-vein thr...

A patient who developed thrombotic microangiopathy while on ticlopidine therapy is reported. Thrombotic microangiopathy resolved with discontinuation of the drug and treatment with plasma exchange and has not recurred during 10 months of follow-up. The emerging data on the risk of developing thrombotic microangiopathy while on Ticlopidine and the possible mechanisms underlying this association ...

Thrombotic microangiopathy results from thrombotic occlusion of the microvasculature leading to fragmentation of red blood cells, profound thrombocytopenia, and a microangiopathic hemolytic anemia with elevation of lactate dehydrogenase and negative direct Coomb's test. This constellation of clinical and laboratory findings is not due to one disease entity; rather, it represents a variety of un...

BACKGROUND Cirrhotic patients present a complex interaction between deficient synthetic liver function, hemodynamic abnormalities and superimposed conditions that alter coagulation system. This alters both coagulation and fibrinolytic processes, increasing bleeding and thrombosis risks. Particularly, critically ill cirrhotic patients represent a diagnostic challenge since they have multiple como...

BACKGROUND The introduction of central venous catheters has advanced medical care, particularly in hemato-oncology. However these can be associated with an increased thrombotic risk. Previous studies have compared the rate of thrombotic events between peripherally- inserted (PICCs) and long term skin tunneled catheters (LTSTCs) noting fewer complications associated with the latter, though this ...
