Corticosteroids are commonly used in the treatment of connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. In this case report, we describe an elderly patient with systemic lupus erythematosus on long-term corticosteroid therapy who presented with symptoms of acute abdomen wit...

An 18-year-old man with a fracture-dislocation of the thoracic spine showed remarkable displacement, but without neurologic complications. The halo-femoral traction allowed a reduction, which has been only partially maintained. Despite this, the clinical result is satisfactory. The lesion appears to be more common than the few cases published in the literature would suggest.

Paragangliomas are rare tumors of the endocrine system. They are highly vascular and in some cases hormonally active, making their management challenging. Although there is strong evidence of the safety and effectiveness of preoperative embolization in the management of spinal tumors, only five cases have been reported in the setting of thoracic paragangliomas. We present the case of a 19-year-...

Injury to the sternum, when due to indirec...

To better understand the biomechanical mechanisms underlying the association between hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine and risk of vertebral fracture and other degenerative spinal pathology, we used a previously validated musculoskeletal model of the spine to determine how thoracic kyphosis angle and spinal posture affect vertebral compressive loading. We simulated an age-related increase in ...

BackgroundTransverse process fractures (TPF) of the thoracic and lumbar spine have become increasingly identified due to CT imaging. Spine service consultation is common for further evaluation management. There are several studies that demonstrate no difference in clinical outcome with or without intervention. However, study our knowledge provides an additional cost analysis. We hypothesize iso...
