Two theoretical models have been proposed to describe long-term dynamics of diversification: the equilibrium model considers the Earth as a closed system with a fixed maximum biological carrying capacity, whereas the expansion model hypothesizes a continuously increasing diversification of life. Based on the analysis of the fossil record of all organisms, Benton suggested contrasting models of ...

Dynamic heterogeneity in glass formers has been related to their static structure using the concept of dynamic propensity. We reexamine this relationship by analyzing dynamical fluctuations in two atomistic glass formers and two theoretical models. We introduce quantitative statistical indicators which show that the dynamics of individual particles cannot be predicted on the basis of the propen...

Optical and magneto-optical properties of amorphous Gd22Fe78 (GdFe) thin films prepared by direct current (DC) sputtering on thermally oxidized substrates were characterized by the combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 5.5 eV. Thin SiNx and Ru coatings were used to prevent the GdFe surface oxidation and contamination. U...

The process by which hundreds of identical capsid proteins self-assemble into icosahedral structures is complex and poorly understood. Establishing constraints on the assembly pathways is crucial to building reliable theoretical models. For example, it is currently an open question to what degree overall assembly kinetics are dominated by one or a few most efficient pathways versus the enormous...

We use tools from Theoretical Computer Science to analyze the computational complexity of determining the h-index, the g-index, and the w-index in various models of computation. Our results confirm the natural intuition that the h-index is an easier concept than the g-index, which in turn is an easier concept than the w-index.

The present article gives an overview of analytical and simulation approaches to describe the relaxation dynamics of proteins. Particularly emphasised are recent developments of theoretical models, such as fractional Brownian dynamics. The latter connects dynamical events seen on the pico- to nanosecond time scale, accessible to quasielastic neutron scattering, and functional dynamics of protei...

This paper offers a critique of manufacturing performance measurement approaches investigated by previous studies particularly in trade-off modelling studies for manufacturing capabilities. We argue that some studies complete validity analyses of the trade-off model using measures of manufacturing performance that are inconsistent with the trade-off theoretical concept. The paper also seeks to ...

Many theoretical models of high-temperature superconductivity focus only on the doping dependence of the CuO(2)-plane electronic structure. However, such models are manifestly insufficient to explain the strong variations in superconducting critical temperature, T(c), among cuprates that have identical hole density but are crystallographically different outside of the CuO(2) plane. A key challe...

Thin liquid films on surfaces are part of our everyday life; they serve, e.g., as coatings or lubricants. The stability of a thin layer is governed by interfacial forces, described by the effective interface potential, and has been subject of many studies in recent decades. In recent years, the dynamics of thin liquid films has come into focus since results on the reduction of the glass transit...

A lubrication model is used to study the dynamics of nanoscale droplets on wettability gradient surfaces. The effects of the gradient size, size of the nanodroplets and the slip on the dynamics have been studied. Our results indicate that the position of the center of mass of the droplets can be well described in terms of a third-order polynomial function of the time of the motion for all the c...
