We first present our view of detection and correction of syntactic errors. We then introdnce a new correction method, based on heuristic criteria used to decide which correction should be preferred. Weighting of these criteria leads to a flexible and parametrable system, which can adapt itself to the user. A partitioning of the trees based on linguistic criteria: agreement rules, rather than co...

While many errors in machine translated texts are due to word sense ambiguity, syntactical transfer still poses problems, too. For a particular type of syntactic structure, namely, subordinate clauses, this paper distinguishes five kinds of translation difficulties: crosslanguage differences, syntactic ambiguity, functional ambiguity, stylistic preferences, and grammatical coverage.

Hierarchical structure has been cherished as a grammatical universal. We use experimental methods to show where linear order is also a relevant syntactic relation. An identical methodology and design were used across six research sites on South Slavic languages. Experimental results show that in certain configurations, grammatical production can in fact favor linear order over hierarchical stru...

In this paper we describe a system for detection and correction of lexical and syntactic errors in a French text. The lexical level uses several techniques (keys, phonetics and morphological generation). The aim of the syntactic level is verification of the structure of a sentence and of relations between words (e.g. agreement). It proceeds by unification of the decorations on the nodes of a de...

It is widely believed that agrammatic aphasics have lost the ability to assign complete syntactic representations. This view stems from indications that agrammatics often fail to comprehend complex syntactic structures, as for example, some types of relative clauses. The present study presents an alternative account. Comprehension by Serbo-Croatian-speaking agrammatic aphasics was tested on fou...

This paper presents a parsing system for the detection of syntactic errors. It combines a robust partial parser which obtains the main sentence components and a finite-state parser used for the description of syntactic error patterns. The system has been tested on a corpus of real texts, containing both correct and incorrect sentences, with promising results.

The present study investigated EFL teachers’ beliefs about oral corrective feedback (CF), their CF-provision practices across elementary and intermediate levels, and their beliefs-practices correspondence. To this end, the researchers conducted a semi-structured interview with the teachers and went on an overall forty-hour observation of their classrooms across both levels. The findings reveale...

This study presents a novel method that measures English language learners’ syntactic competence towards improving automated speech scoring systems. In contrast to most previous studies which focus on the length of production units such as the mean length of clauses, we focused on capturing the differences in the distribution of morpho-syntactic features or grammatical expressions across profic...

An extragrammatical sentence is what a normal parser fails to analyze. It is important to recover it using only syntactic information although results of recovery are better if semantic factors are considered. A general algorithm for least-errors recognition, which is based only on syntactic information, was proposed by G. Lyon to deal with the extragrammaticality. We extended this algorithm to...
