Double pyramidal lobe is a scarce anatomical variation of the thyroid gland. Its presence impinges on the completeness of total and subtotal thyroidectomy and the postoperative treatment. Surgeons should be always aware of this variation in order to perform sufficient resection of the thyroid gland and minimize the possibility of recurrence of benign and malignant thyroidopathies.
Ectopic thyroid tissue in the lower neck with a coexisting normally located multinodular goiter is a rare entity. We present a 27-year old asymptomatic woman with a recent history of a painless mass in the left side of her lower neck. Thyroid function tests were normal. An ultrasound of her neck showed a multinodular goiter and a 3.4 cm solid mass in the left lower cervical area. These findings...
In this study, we investigated the value of thyroxine administration to prevent recurrence after bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter. Patients that had benign multinodular goiter were operated on with the same surgical principles: ligation of both superior and inferior thyroid arteries on both sides, bilateral subtotal resection of thyroid gland including all visible nodule...
The present study compared the long-term outcome of subtotal thyroidectomy (ST) to that of total thyroidectomy (TT) in Graves' disease (GD). Patients with GD requiring surgery were divided between two groups: ST and TT. Postoperative thyroid function (PoTF) changes, including hypothyroidism, euthyroidism, and hyperthyroidism, and surgical complications were analyzed 3 months and 2 years after s...
Thyroid tissue located within the upper airway has received only sparse attention in the English literature. Aberrant benign thyroid masses may present as either an unrelated autopsy finding or with symptoms such as dyspnea, hemoptysis or adult -onset asthma. There is no place for medical management in the therapy of these lesions, although the appropriate surgical procedure is not clearly ...
Pendred's syndrome is defined as a triad of congenital perceptive hearing loss, goiter, and abnormal perchlorate test. Three brothers with Pendred's syndrome [P.S.] are reported. The oldest brother has hearing loss (he has been deaf and mute since childhood) and has a large goiter. A thyroid scan revealed euthyroid multinodular goiter and a perchlorate test was performed, and reported abno...
We are reporting a case of a young female, who presented to emergency room with sudden increase in thyroid swelling, high fever and acute respiratory distress. Clinical diagnosis of spontaneous infection of thyroid cyst was made. Operative finding was infection of thyroid cyst with gas formation. Systemic antibiotics and operative intervention by subtotal thyroidectomy led to recovery of the pa...
Glucocorticoid therapy is not considered as an authentic method for obtaining euthyroid in Graves' disease. We tried the administration of prednisolone as a preoperative preparation for subtotal thyroidectomy in 4 hyperthyroid patients with Graves' disease who had suffered adverse effects of thionamide antithyroid drugs, including agranulocytosis, liver damage and skin eruptions. Following oral...
UNLABELLED The local anesthesia in thyroid surgery is rarely used, only in selected patients. Majority of centers performing thyroid surgery with local anesthesia have possibility to convert to the general anesthesia. The aim of the study was to present our experiences with partial thyroidectomy under local anesthesia performed in 49 consecutive subjects in the Central African Republic (bilater...
