Context. Observations of polarized radio emission show that large-scale (regular) magnetic fields in spiral galaxies are not fully axisymmetric, but generally stronger in interarm regions. In some nearby galaxies such as NGC 6946 they are organized in narrow magnetic arms situated between the material spiral arms. Aims. The phenomenon of magnetic arms and their relation to the optical spiral ar...

The paper reports a new method for three-dimensional observation of the location of focused particle streams along both the depth and width of the channel cross-section in spiral inertial microfluidic systems. The results confirm that particles are focused near the top and bottom walls of the microchannel cross-section, revealing clear insights on the focusing and separation mechanism. Based on...

This work presents a specifically designed spiral type inertial micro-fluidic channel for separating non-motile sperm cell from cellular debris. Demonstration with a mixture of non-motile sperm and red blood cells showed that 82% of sperm could be focused into a separate outlet from the red blood cells.

The rapidly growing field of biotechnology has created a critical need for simple, fast andhigh-throughput processes for the separation and purification of biomolecules from biologicalmatrices. In recent years, several bioseparation techniques have been proposed as advancedalternatives to the classical separation methods. These modern processes emphasize ultrahighselective and sensitive analysi...

The ferroelectric polarization of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets induced by helical spin-spiral order is not explained by any existing model of magnetic-order-driven ferroelectricity. We resolve this problem by developing a general theory for the ferroelectric polarization induced by spin-spiral order and then by evaluating the coefficients needed to specify the general theory on the basis...

The self-excitation of magnetic field by a spiral Couette flow between two coaxial cylinders is considered. We solve numerically the fully nonlinear, three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for magnetic Prandtl numbers P(m) (ratio of kinematic viscosity to magnetic diffusivity) between 0.14 and 10 and kinematic and magnetic Reynolds numbers up to about 2000. In the initial stage o...

Partition curves are widely used to determine the spiral separator efficiency. In this work, the partition curves were used in order to investigate the particle transportation to concentrate and tailing streams. Simulation of fine particle removal using the size-by-size partition curves showed that the recovery of gangue particles to concentrate can decrease 8.7%. It also showed that the recove...

Background: Giardia is one of the infectious agents that can be transmitted by surface water and cause a disease. We designed and fabricated a magnetic system to separate the giardia cysts from water. Materials and Methods: In this study, giardia cysts were concentrated by sucrose floatation method. The cysts were mixed with physiological saline and their concentration was adjusted to 100,000 c...
