The time evolution of the morphology of homogeneous phases during spinodal decomposition is described using a family of morphological measures known as Minkowski functionals. They provide the characteristic length scale L of patterns in a convenient, statistically robust, and computationally inexpensive way. They also allow one to study the scaling behavior of the content, shape, and connectivi...

We have used a combination of neutron scattering experiments and Monte Carlo simulations to study the initial stages of first-order phase transitions. We focus on quenches wherein the nascent phase is formed by homogeneous nucleation, and we approach the spinodal, i.e., the quench depth at which the original phase becomes unstable. In this regime, we show how critical nuclei sizes are determine...

Researchers attributed the orderly arranged nanoscale phases observed in many multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) to spinodal/spinodal-mediated phase transformation pathways. However, spinodal decomposition is not well understood multicomponent systems. Although theoretical background available, CALPHAD databases were used explore miscibility gap MPEAs. In this work, we develop a framework u...

This paper addresses the phenomenon of spinodal decomposition for the CahnHilliard equation. Namely, we are interested in why most solutions to the CahnHilliard equation which start near a homogeneous equilibrium u0 in the spinodal interval exhibit phase separation with a characteristic wavelength when exiting a ball of radius R. There are two mathematical explanations for spinodal decompositio...

Motivated by results in exact renormalization group studies, we consider an inflaton model with non-minimal coupling, leading to a potential which evolves with the curvature scalar of the Universe, in a similar way a coarse grained potential evolves with the energy scale. Starting with a symmetry breaking feature, the evolution of the effective potential mimics a Wilsonian flow in energy, and f...

copper matrix composite reinforced by 1wt.% tib2 particles was prepared using in situ reaction of cu-1.4wt.% ti and cu-0.7wt.% b by rapid solidification and subsequent heat treatment for 1-20 hrs at 900ºc. high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (hrtem) characterization showed that primary tib2 particles were formed in liquid copper. heat treatment of as-solidified samples led to the f...

We have investigated the unstable spinodal region of asymmetric nuclear matter in the extended Zimanyi-Moszkowski (EZM) model. It is found that the model produces larger spinodal region, higher upper-density boundary and maximum asymmetry, than the familiar nonlinear Walecka model. This is due to the renormalized vector-meson coupling constants in the EZM model. Recent experimental developments...
