We review recent work on the dynamics of membranes. First, we discuss the viscous modes of a free bilayer membrane, laking inlo account the couplina betwccn bending and the local density of the two monolayers. Ap:art from import:ant corrections to the conventional bending mode, we obtain a second slow mode which is essentially a fluctuation in the density difference of the two monoiayers. dalll...
We use a form of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to derive formulas giving the rate of production of spin-1/2 baryons in terms of the fluctuations of either meson or quark fields. The most general formulas do not assume thermal or chemical equilibrium. When evaluated in a thermal ensemble we find equilibration times on the order of 10 fm/c near the critical temperature in QCD. T thermodynamics: we find a specific heat linear in T and a local spectral density of spin excitations, χ′′ loc(ω) ∼ ω for a spin glass state which is marginally stable to fluctuations in the replicon modes. For small S, the spin-glass order is fragile, and a spin-liquid state with χ′′ loc ∼ tanh(ω/2T) dominates the properties over a significant range of T and ω. We argue that the latter state ...
Production of spin 1/2 fermions and gravitinos by the standard mechanism of amplification of quantum fluctuations during the dilatondriven inflation phase in models of string cosmology is highly suppressed. Constraints on string cosmology models from gravitational production of gravitinos, contrary to expectations, are similar to constraints on other models.
The fluctuation of ESR parameters which reflects the intrinsic "site-to-site fluctuation" in glass was extracted by analyzing the ESR lineshape of spin probes, Cu2+ and -induced Cd+, for the wide composition range of soda borate glasses. The results obtained are summarized as follows (i) The lineshape of Cu2+ was closely reproduced by introducing a skewed distribution function of g„into the lin...
A scheme is presented that is based on the alloy analogy model and allows one to account for thermal lattice vibrations as well as spin fluctuations when calculating response quantities in solids. Various models to deal with spin fluctuations are discussed concerning their impact on the resulting temperature-dependent magnetic moment, longitudinal conductivity, and Gilbert damping parameter. It...
Higher order time correlators of spin fluctuations reveal considerable information about spin interactions. We argue that in a broad class of spin systems, one can justify a phenomenological approach to explore such correlators. We predict that the third and fourth order spin cumulants are described by a universal function that can be parametrized by a small set of parameters. We show that the ...
