Enterobacteriaceae is present in various niches worldwide (i.e., the gastrointestinal tracts of animals, clinical specimens, and diverse environments) hosts some well-known pathogens salmonellas, shigellas pathogenic coliforms). No investigation has focused on its occurrence marine salterns, it not clear if these hypersaline environments could be a reservoir for bacteria including potentially h...

Marine salterns are composed of several shallow ponds with a salinity gradient, from seawater to salt saturation, with gradually changing microbial populations. Here, we report the metagenome sequencing of the prokaryotic microbiota of two ponds with 13% and 33% salinity from a saltern in Santa Pola, Spain.

Marine salterns are artificial multipond systems designed for the commercial production of salt by evaporation of seawater. We report here the metagenomic sequence of the prokaryotic microbiota of a pond with intermediate salinity (21% total salts) of a saltern located in Isla Cristina, Huelva, southwest Spain.

Although hypersaline environments pose challenges to life because of the low water content (water activity), many such habitats appear to support eukaryotic microbes. This contribution presents brief reviews of our current knowledge on eukaryotes of water-column haloclines and brines from Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basins (DHABs) of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as shallow-water hypersaline m...

Strains C23T and HBSQ001 were isolated from solar salterns and are novel square-shaped, aerobic, extremely halophilic members of the domain Archaea and family Halobacteriaceae. Cells stained Gram-negative and grew optimally in media containing 18 % salts at around neutral pH. Mg2+ is not required. The DNA G+C content of both isolates was 46.9 mol% and DNA-DNA cross-hybridization showed a relate...

Halophilic microorganisms derived from diverse thalassohaline and athalassohaline environments including marine estuaries, saline and soda lakes, inland solar salterns and acidic habitats are categorized as slight-, moderateand extreme halophiles according to their NaCl requirements. Taxonomic studies with culturable diversities of halophiles revealed that they belong to both Archaea and Bacter...

Melanin is nearly a ubiquitous pigment synthesized by living organisms in the course of hydroxylation and polymerization of organic compounds. Melanins have immense application potentials in the field of agriculture, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries (photoprotection and mosquitocidal activity isolated from Streptomycete). In this study, the halophilic black yeast, Hortaea werneckii produ...

Abstract Brine shrimps ( Artemia ) have undergone geographic range and demographic expansions as a result of their interaction with humans since the beginning salt harvesting. This has favoured expansion some species but compromising survival others. Mediterranean native populations salina from coastal salterns lagoons are facing presence introduced invasive American monica (= A . franciscana )...
