Maxillary hypoplasia is a frequently observed secondary deformity in individuals born with cleft lip and palate. The impairment of maxillary growth coupled with extensive postoperative scarring as a result of multiple previous surgeries brings about maxillary deficiency in all planes viz vertical, horizontal and transverse. The resulting class III skeletal malocclusion together with maxillary h...

Fractures of the tibial tuberosity are infrequent injuries that occur during adolescence. Displaced tibial tuberosity fractures are typically treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Since these fractures occur at or near skeletal maturity, growth disturbances are not seen. This paper presents a case, the first report to our knowledge, of genu recurvatum deformity after open reduction...

Background: Although many authors advise to postpone surgical intervention until skeletal maturity is reached, the Langenskiöld procedure—entailing physiolysis and the release of Vickers’ ligament—is a known procedure in case of Madelung’s deformity in children. Although advised in textbooks and recent reviews, the results and late sequelae of this procedure have been poorly documented. The aim...

We reviewed the results of a selective à la carte soft-tissue release operation for recurrent or residual deformity after initial conservative treatment for idiopathic clubfoot by the Ponseti method. Recurrent or residual deformity occurred in 13 (19 feet) of 33 patients (48 feet; 40%). The mean age at surgery was 2.3 years (1.3 to 4) and the mean follow-up was 3.6 years (2 to 5.3). The mean Pi...

Orthognathic surgical corrections of deformities and defects are performed to establish normal functional relationships between osseous, muscular, and contiguous structures. At times, aesthetics will be improved, but this psychosocial improvement is an additional benefit as long as correction of the functional aspects of the skeletal deformity constitutes the criteria for surgical intervention.

943 Spasticity in cerebral palsy stems from a net disinhibition of spinal reflexes because of a primary non-progressive cere-bral lesion. The resulting hyperactive reflexes and increased muscle tone create a dynamic, shortening deformity which is exacerbated by longitudinal skeletal growth in the growing child. This makes the management of dynamic deformities such as an equinus gait by physioth...

This paper presents a new application of a neural network model in the area of dedicated (handwritten numerals) binary pattern thinning. The thinning method has been tested on 6000 randomly selected images of unconstrained handwritten numerals. The test results show that the method introduces minimal structural deformity and the skeletal shape of the underlying pattern is retained.

Patients with skeletal dysplasia are prone to developing advanced osteoarthritis of the knee requiring total knee replacement (TKR) at a younger age than the general population. TKR in this unique group of patients is a technically demanding procedure owing to the deformity, flexion contracture, generalised hypotonia and ligamentous laxity. We retrospectively reviewed the outcome of 11 TKRs per...

High respiratory obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a potentially disabling condition, characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, disruptive snoring, recurrent episodes of apnea (or hypopnea) and nocturnal hypoxemia. It is a sign of increased pharyngeal airflow resistance (apnea hypopnea index (AHI ≥ 5). Twelve patients suffering from mild-to-severe OSAS received CPAP treatment and ...

The treatment of skeletal facial asymmetry, especially accompanied with skeletal Class III deformity, could be complex and challenging. In this case report, we present the orthodontic and surgical management of a 20-year-old girl who had a severe craniofacial deformity, including skeletal facial asymmetry and mandibular prognathism. During preoperative orthodontics, 2 upper first premolars were...
