We describe the construction of two corpora in the domain of Swiss legal texts: The DS21 corpus is based on the Collection of Swiss Law Sources and contains historical legal texts from the early Middle Ages up to 1798; the Swiss Legislation Corpus (SLC) is based on the Classified Compilation of Swiss Federal Legislation and contains all current Swiss federal laws. The paper summarizes the key p...
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, a curated protein database, and dictyBase, the Model Organism Database for Dictyostelium discoideum, have established a collaboration to improve data sharing. One of the major steps in this effort was the 'Dicty annotation marathon', a week-long exercise with 30 annotators aimed at achieving a major increase in the number of D. discoideum proteins represented in UniProtKB/...
BACKGROUND The rates of congenital disorders in Swiss sheep were determined by a questionnaire which was sent to 3,183 members of the Swiss Sheep Breeders' Association. FINDINGS A total of 993 questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 31.2%. Of these, 862 questionnaires originated from farms keeping one of the predominant Swiss sheep breeds: Swiss White Alpine sheep, Brown-Heade...
Several features of subfitness are analyzed. Isbell’s Spatiality Theorem leads to the concept of T1-spatiality which is compared with the TD-spatiality. Subfitness is put into relation with other weak separation axioms (and with the existence of nearness), both in spaces and locales, and seeming discrepancies are explained. A new characteristic of subfitness by means of codensity is presented.
This study sought to examine any differences in upper rectus abdominis (URA) and lower rectus abdominis (LRA) muscle activity during four abdominal exercises, the curl-up, Swiss ball curl-up, Swiss ball jackknife and Swiss ball rollout. Fourteen healthy adults (7 males, 7 females, mean age+/-S.D.=21.8+/-3.8 years) performed abdominal exercises in a randomised order following maximal voluntary i...
Ontology-based annotations associate objects, such as genes and proteins, with well-defined ontology concepts to semantically and uniformly describe object properties. Such annotation mappings are utilized in different applications and analysis studies whose results strongly depend on the quality of the used annotations. To study the quality of annotations we propose a generic evaluation approa...
We consider a modified “Swiss cheese” model in the Brans-Dicke theory, and discuss the evolution of black holes in the expanding universe. We define the black hole radius by the Misner-Sharp mass and find the time evolution for dust and vacuum universes.
We present a fast algorithm to search for repeating fragments within protein sequences. The technique is based on an extension of the Smith-Waterman algorithm that allows the calculation of sub-optimal alignments of a sequence against itself. We are able to estimate the statistical significance of all sub-optimal alignment scores. We also rapidly determine the length of the repeating fragment a...
We analysed the structural properties of protein regions containing arrays of perfect and nearly perfect tandem repeats. Naturally occurring proteins with perfect repeats are practically absent among the proteins with known 3D structures. The great majority of such regions in the Protein Data Bank are found in the proteins designed de novo. The abundance of natural structured proteins with tand...
Research exploring the underlying processes involved in successful mentorships has been lacking. In the present study, the roles of career motivation and career self-efficacy as explanatory factors were examined. Career motivation mediated the relationship between career mentoring and performance effectiveness. Contrary to prediction, only marginal support was received for career self-efficacy ...
