A case of mixed infection due to leptospira, dengue and hepatitis E is reported. Similar clinical presentation and simultaneous transmission of these diseases during rainy season can cause substantial misdiagnosis. Serological tests play a mainstay in diagnosis. Early detection by appropriate serological tests and institution of therapy is crucial and life saving.

This study comprised 100 persons with antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV), including 77 intravenous drug users (IVDUs). They were tested with serological HCV typing assays (Murex HCV serotyping 1-6 assay; Chiron RIBA HCV Serotyping SIA). Patients with a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for HCV (n = 66) were tested with genotyping molecular assays (Inno-Lipa HCV II test; Sorin GEN-ETI-...

BACKGROUND Serological methods to monitor Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonisation in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are advocated but the diagnostic value of a commercially available P aeruginosa antibody test to detect early and chronic P aeruginosa colonisation in a non-research setting has not been assessed. METHODS Colonisation with P aeruginosa was estimated by regular culture of sputum ...

Syphilis, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, is an infection recognized since antiquity. It was first reported at the end of the 15th century in Europe. Infections may be sexually transmitted as well as spread from an infected mother to her fetus or through blood transfusions. The laboratory diagnosis of syphilis infection is complex. Because this organism cannot be cul...

CONTEXT The most frequently used methods for detecting antibodies are the indirect immunofluorescence test and the enzymatic immunoassay (ELISA). The polymerase chain reaction is a molecular biology technique in which the production of large amounts of specific DNA fragments is induced from very low concentrations of complex substrates aloowing the detection of very low amounts of viral particl...

BACKGROUND Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type-specific serological tests are now widely available, but indications for their use have not been well defined. The California Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Controllers Association convened a committee of clinicians and researchers to make recommendations for the use of type-specific HSV type 2 (HSV-2) serological tests. METHODS By means of a sy...
