Fuhrmann syndrome and the Al-Awadi/Raas-Rothschild/Schinzel phocomelia syndrome are considered to be distinct limb-malformation disorders characterized by various degrees of limb aplasia/hypoplasia and joint dysplasia in humans. In families with these syndromes, we found homozygous missense mutations in the dorsoventral-patterning gene WNT7A and confirmed their functional significance in retrov...

The Cunningham project seeks to factor numbers of the form bn±1 with b = 2, 3, . . . small. One of the most useful techniques is Aurifeuillian Factorization whereby such a number is partially factored by replacing bn by a polynomial in such a way that polynomial factorization is possible. For example, by substituting y = 2k into the polynomial factorization (2y2)2+1 = (2y2−2y+1)(2y2+2y+1) we ca...

Let g(x) be a fixed non-constant complex polynomial. It was conjectured by Schinzel that if g(h(x)) has boundedly many terms, then h(x) ∈ C[x] must also have boundedly many terms. Solving an older conjecture raised by Rényi and by Erdös, Schinzel had proved this in the special cases g(x) = x; however that method does not extend to the general case. Here we prove the full Schinzel’s conjecture (...

In 1975, McKusick1 first mentioned a syndrome of ulnar ray defects and genital abnormalities, citing a personal communication from A Schinzel (1973), and named it 'Schinzel syndrome' (McKusick No 18145) in this and in all subsequent editions of his catalogue.2 One year later, Pallister et a13 and Gonzales et a14 described the same syndrome in two families, and the latter authors named the syndr...

Let X be a linear space over the field of real or complex numbers. We characterize solutions f : X → K and M : K → K of the equation f(x + M(f(x))y) = f(x)f(y) under assumption that the set {x ∈ X : f(x) 6= 0} has an algebraically interior point. As a consequence we give solutions of the equation such that f is bounded on a set having an algebraically interior point.
