Wavelet decompositions are based on basis functions satisfying refinement equations. The stability, linear independence and orthogonality of the integer translates of basis functions play an essential role in the study of wavelets. In this paper we characterize these properties in terms of the mask sequence in the refinement equation satisfied by the basis function. AMS Subject Classifications:...

A refinable set is a compact set with positive Lebesgue measure whose characteristic function satisfies a refinement equation. Refinable sets are a generalization of self-affine tiles. But unlike the latter, the refinement equations defining refinable sets may have negative coefficients, and a refinable set may not tile. In this paper, we establish some fundamental properties of these sets.

We present a method for Poisson’s equation that computes guaranteed upper and lower bounds for the values of linear functional outputs of the exact weak solution of the infinite dimensional continuum problem using traditional finite element approximations. The guarantee holds uniformly for any level of refinement, not just in the asymptotic limit of refinement. Given a finite element solution a...

In this paper, we exploit the relation between the regularity of refinable functions with non-integer dilations and the distribution of powers of a fixed number modulo 1, and show the nonexistence of a non-trivial C∞ solution of the refinement equation with non-integer dilations. Using this, we extend the results on the refinable splines with non-integer dilations and construct a counterexample...

Abstract. The refinement equation φ(t) = ∑N2 k=N1 ck φ(2t − k) plays a key role in wavelet theory and in subdivision schemes in approximation theory. Viewed as an expression of linear dependence among the time-scale translates |a|1/2φ(at − b) of φ ∈ L2(R), it is natural to ask if there exist similar dependencies among the time-frequency translates e2πibtf(t + a) of f ∈ L2(R). In other words, wh...

For the simple layer potential V that is associated with the 3D Laplacian, we consider the weakly singular integral equation V φ = f . This equation is discretized by the lowest order Galerkin boundary element method. We prove convergence of an h-adaptive algorithm that is driven by a weighted residual error estimator. Moreover, we identify the approximation class for which the adaptive algorit...

We study the inverse boundary value problem for the wave equation and recovery of the wavespeed upon taking a time-Fourier transform of the data. We design a hierarchical compressed reconstruction in a multilevel scheme for the inverse boundary value problem associated with the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichletto-Neumann map, or the single-layer potential operator, at selected frequencies ...
