Human categorization of sound seems predominantly based on sound source properties. To estimate these source properties we propose a novel sound analysis method, which separates sound into different sonic textures: tones, pulses, and broadband noises. The audible presence of tones or pulses corresponds to more extended cochleagram patterns than can be expected on the basis of correlations intro...

A hydrated regular cellulose paper filter modified with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) hydrogel was successfully fabricated for water/oil separation. The fabricated filter's hydrophilic and oleophobic properties resulted in increased filter life and decreased environmental impact, while displaying water flux of 89.6 L h(-1) m(-2) with efficiency ≥99% under gravitational force.

We find pairs of solutions to a differential equation which is obtained as a special limit of a generalized spheroidal wave equation (this is also known as confluent Heun equation). One solution in each pair is given by a series of hypergeometric functions and converges for any finite value of the independent variable z, while the other is given by a series of modified Bessel functions and conv...

We consider subtorus actions on divisorial toric varieties. Here divisoriality means that the variety has many Cartier divisors like quasiprojective and smooth ones. We characterize when a subtorus action on such a toric variety admits a categorical quotient in the category of divisorial varieties. Our result generalizes previous statements for the quasiprojective case. A first step in the proo...

In this contribution, we extend ‘Kalman-filter’ theory by introducing a new BLUE–BLUP recursion of the partitioned measurement and dynamic models. Instead of working with known state-vector means, we relax the model and assume these means to be unknown. The recursive BLUP is derived from first principles, in which a prominent role is played by the model’s misclosures. As a consequence of the me...

In this paper we present a filter for identifying posts from eyewitnesses to various event types on Twitter, including shootings, police activity, and protests. The filter combines sociolinguistic markers and targeted language content with straightforward keywords and regular expressions to yield good accuracy in the returned tweets. Once a set of eyewitness posts in a given semantic context ha...

Let Tn be a (d − 1)-ary tree of height n. A bilateral regular tree is the multigraph T d n,n that is defined by : (i) juxtaposing two Tn’s, (ii) drawing a new edge between two roots and (iii) drawing d− 1 edges between each leaf and a new vertex, called the sink. In this paper the sandpile group of T d n,n is determined.

Quasi-nearness biframes provide an asymmetric setting for the study of nearness; in [1] a completion (called a quasi-completion) was constructed for such structures and in [2] completeness was characterized in terms of the convergence of regular Cauchy bifilters. In this talk, questions of functoriality for this quasi-completion are considered and one sees that having enough regular Cauchy bifi...

This paper concerns the construction of highly symmetric compactly supported wavelets for hexagonal data/image and triangle surface multiresolution processing. Recently hexagonal image processing has attracted attention. Compared with the conventional square lattice, the hexagonal lattice has several advantages, including that it has higher symmetry. It is desirable that the filter banks for he...
