A simplified method for the analysis of both the glyceride-rich Sf 20-1 O5 and the cholesterol-rich St 0-20 lowdensity lipoproteins is presented. It consists of serum lipoprotein fractionation by preparative ultracentrifugation and subsequent quantitative analysis by refractometry. Comparison of this technique with the technically more difficult analytic ultracentrifugal methodology reveals com...

A X-ray refraction method is presented which reveals the inner surface and interface concentrations of nanometer dimensions due to the short X-ray wavelength near 10 μm. Sub-micron particle, crack and pore sizes are easily determined by "X-ray Refractometry" without destroying the structure by cutting or polishing for microscopic techniques. Beyond this analytical potential for (integral) analy...

In this work, we discuss an optical method for measuring surface tension induced menisci. The principle of measurement is based upon the change in the background pattern produced by the curvature of the meniscus acting as a lens. We measure the meniscus profile over an inclined glass plate and utilize the measured meniscus for estimation of surface tension and refractive index.

In this paper, for the first time, an on-chip optofluidic imaging system is innovated to measure the biophysical signatures of single waterborne bacteria, including both their refractive indices and morphologies (size and shape), based on immersion refractometry. The key features of the proposed optofluidic imaging platform include (1) multiple sites for single-bacterium trapping, which enable ...

Spatial light interference microscopy (SLIM) is a novel method developed in our laboratory that provides quantitative phase images of transparent structures with a 0.3 nm spatial and 0.03 nm temporal accuracy owing to the white light illumination and its common path interferometric geometry. We exploit these features and demonstrate SLIM's ability to perform topography at a single atomic layer ...

We present, for the first time to our knowledge, quantitative phase images associated with unstained 5 mum thick tissue slices of mouse brain, spleen, and liver. The refractive properties of the tissue are retrieved in terms of the average refractive index and its spatial variation. We find that the average refractive index varies significantly with tissue type, such that the brain is character...
