Pythium attrantheridium sp. nov. is a new species isolated from cavity spot lesions of carrots as well as apple and cherry seedlings from various locations widely distributed in Canada and the USA. This fungus is closely related to the heterothallic P. intermedium, but is distinguished by: (1) unique molecular characteristics; (2) unique morphological characteristics; and (3) mating incompatibi...

In a 3-year-study, we analysed the population dynamics of the reed pathogen Pythium phragmitis and other reed-associated oomycetes colonizing fresh and dried reed leaves in the littoral zone of a large lake. Oomycete communities derived from internal transcribed spacer clone libraries were clearly differentiated according to substrate and seasonal influences. In fresh leaves, diverse communitie...

The authors investigated mycoflora developing on the eggs of three species of the percid fish. At total of 45 aquatic fungi (including 26 as parasites or necrotrophs) were noted. Pythium capillosum is a new record for Poland. The highest number of fungus species developed on eggs of all percids in water from the Biala river, which had the highest content of biogenic compounds.

Sequence analysis of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS) was used to establish phylogenetic relationships among 23 isolates of Pythium insidiosum, the etiological agent of pythiosis in mammals. The isolates were divided into three distinct clades that exhibited significant geographic isolation. Clade I consisted of isolates from North, Central, and South America, while clade II...

ABSTRACT Strain L324-92 is a novel Bacillus sp. with biological activity against three root diseases of wheat, namely take-all caused by Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, Rhizoctonia root rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG8, and Pythium root rot caused mainly by Pythium irregulare and P. ultimum, that exhibits broad-spectrum inhibitory activity and grows at temperatures from 4 to 40 degree...

Soil pathogens affect plant community structure and function through negative plant-soil feedbacks that may contribute to the invasiveness of non-native plant species. Our understanding of these pathogen-induced soil feedbacks has relied largely on observations of the collective impact of the soil biota on plant populations, with few observations of accompanying changes in populations of specif...

Pythium and Phytophthora are among the most well-known plant pathogens around the world that cause rotting of seeds, root, and crown, seedling death, and soft rot of fruits in contact with the soil. In this research, 347 isolates of these two genera and their close genus, Phytopythium were isolated from the cucurbits fields in Kermanshah province, Iran and examined in...

During a study on the occurrence and pathogenicity of oomycetes in the reed-belt (Phragmites australis) of Lake Constance (Germany), a new Pythium resembling the important cereal pathogen species complex P. arrhenomanes/P. graminicola was consistently isolated from necrotic mature reed leaves and reed rhizosphere samples. The new species proved to be significantly more aggressive towards reed l...

Pythium species are morphologically polymorphic, physiologically unique and ecologically versatile, which make them significant both theoretically and practically. They are ubiquitous in soil and in water, distributed worldwide, and with very diverse host ranges. They include some of the most important and destructive plant pathogens, causing losses of seeds, pre-emergence and post-emergence da...
