We report a case of Plasmodium falciparum and P. malariae mixed infection in a patient who had been living in Malawi. This is the first case of P. malariae reported in Sri Lanka in 4 decades. The presence of both parasites was confirmed by microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The history strongly indicated that the infection had been acquired from Malawi. The patient had liver dysfun...

A novel form of human malaria Plasmodium knowlesi has been identified in small epidemic foci occurred during the last decade in Malaysia. Based on a review of the available literature data, the Authors underline the diagnostic importance of molecular biology examinations performed with primers which are specific of Plasmodium knowlesi, since the standard hemoscopy may fail in distinguishing Pla...

Data are missing on the diversity of Plasmodium spp. infecting apes that live in their natural habitat, with limited possibility of human-mosquito-ape exchange. We surveyed Plasmodium spp. diversity in wild chimpanzees living in an undisturbed tropical rainforest habitat and found 5 species: P. malariae, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. reichenowi, and P. gaboni.

Plasmodium spp. parasites cause malaria in 300 to 500 million individuals each year. Disease occurs during the blood-stage of the parasite's life cycle, where the parasite is thought to replicate exclusively within erythrocytes. Infected individuals can also suffer relapses after several years, from Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale surviving in hepatocytes. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmo...

Plasmepsin 4 from the malarial parasite Plasmodium malariae (PmPM4) is a member of the plasmepsins (Plasmodium pepsins), a subfamily of the pepsin-like aspartic proteases whose ortholog in the malarial parasite P. falciparum is involved in hemoglobin digestion in its digestive vacuole. Crystals of PmPM4 in complex with the small-molecule inhibitor AG1776 have been grown from a precipitant of 15...

Plasmodiums are protozoa that may infect various hosts. Only five species are now recognized as naturally parasitizing humans: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium knowlesi. This fifth species, P. knowlesi, previously identified as naturally parasitizing the monkey Macaca fascicularis, has been microscopically confused for a long time wit...
