An 18-year-old girl with moderate joint laxity presented with recurrent dislocation of the calcaneocuboid joint in both feet. We achieved successful stabilisation on both sides by reconstruction of the ligaments and capsule using the plantaris tendons.
1. The stresses applied during fast locomotion are sufficient to stretch the tendon far into the linear region of the load-extension plot. 2. The tangent modulus in the linear region is about 1.65 GN.m-2 and is independent of frequency for oscillations in the range 0.22 to 11 Hz. 3. Internal damping dissipates about 7% of the mechanical energy applied during oscillations. The load range (0 to a...
The levels of c-myc and c-fos mRNA were investigated in rat skeletal muscle by Northern hybridization. During post-natal development in the rat, c-myc mRNA levels were similar at birth and at 7 and 21 days of age, but then declined at 90 days and were barely detectable at 1 year. c-fos mRNA levels followed this pattern of expression until 90 days, but showed a large increase at 1 year. Hypertro...
Materials and methods: Data were evaluated from 41 patients that underwent surgical repair for acute Achilles tendon ruptures with these 2 diff erent surgery methods. In the fi rst group, which included 21 patients (19 male, 2 female; mean age: 36.8 years; age range: 22 to 49), we performed augmentation with the plantaris tendon aft er an end-to-end primary repair with a modifi ed Kessler techn...
During rapid movements, tendons can act like springs, temporarily storing work done by muscles and then releasing it to power body movements. For some activities, such as frog jumping, energy is released from tendon much more rapidly than it is stored, thus amplifying muscle power output. The period during which energy is loaded into a tendon by muscle work may be aided by a catch mechanism tha...
Background: Treatment of insertional achilles tendinopathy is known to be difficult. Eccentric calf muscle exercises and extracorporeal shockwave therapy have been proposed as the primary treatments for this condition, but surgery is indicated after failed conservative management. There is no consensus about the most efficient surgical treatment. Objectives: To evaluate a new ultrasound and col...
A growing body of research on the mechanics and energetics of terrestrial locomotion has demonstrated that elastic elements acting in series with contracting muscle are critical components of sustained, stable and efficient gait. Far fewer studies have examined how the nervous system modulates muscle-tendon interaction dynamics to optimize 'tuning' or meet varying locomotor demands. To explore ...
