BACKGROUND Within the lateral pillar classification of the Legg-Calvé-Perthes (LCP) disease, hips seem quite variable in the pattern of fragmentation as seen in radiographs. The purpose of this study was to determine: if it is possible to reliably subdivide the lateral pillar groups into femoral head fragmentation patterns, and if such a subdivision of the lateral pillar groupings is clinically...

Abstract Pillar stability guidelines have been presented by numerous authors in the past, based on a combination of empirical observations (mostly visual) from mining applications and simple numerical (elastic or continuum plasticity) models. In many cases, resulting design limits for pillar dimensioning are as universal all rockmass conditions stress regimes. There developments past decades me...

We present experimental demonstration and analysis of enhanced surface second harmonic generation (SHG) from hexagonal arrays of silicon pillars. Three sets of Si pillar samples with truncated cone-shaped pillar arrays having periods of 500, 1000, and 2000 nm, and corresponding average diameters of 200, 585 and 1550 nm, respectively, are fabricated by colloidal lithography and plasma dry etchin...

We compare mechanical strength of f.c.c. gold and b.c.c. molybdenum single crystal pillars of sub-micrometer diameter in uniaxial compression ests. Both crystals show an increase of flow stress with decreasing diameter, but the change is more pronounced in Au than in Mo. The ratio etween the observed maximum flow stress and the theoretical strength is much larger in Au pillars than in Mo pillar...

We report the results of constant strain rate experiments on electroplated, single crystalline copper pillars with diameters between 75 and 525 nm. At slow strain rates, 10 3 s , pillar diameters with 150 nm and above show a size-dependent strength similar to previous reports. Below 150 nm, we find that the size effect vanishes as the strength transitions to a relatively size-independent regime...

The reaction of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene and paraformaldehyde using AlBr(3) yields multiple-deprotected pillar[5]arenes. A1/B2 di-deprotected pillar[5]arene can be isolated by silica gel chromatography and washing procedures. The X-ray structure and polymerization of the A1/B2 di-deprotected pillar[5]arene are reported.

The complexation behavior of pillar[6]arene hosts towards a carbonium ion, tropylium tetrafluoroborate (T·BF4), and the formation of novel charge-transfer (CT) inclusion complexes are described. In contrast, smaller pillar[5]arenes and larger pillar[7]arenes cannot form such complexes due to the unsuitable cavity dimensions.

Background and purpose - Different radiographic classifications have been proposed for prediction of outcome in Perthes disease. We assessed whether the modified lateral pillar classification would provide more reliable interobserver agreement and prognostic value compared with the original lateral pillar classification and the Catterall classification. Patients and methods - 42 patients (38 bo...

The paper investigates the fabrication of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) titanium alloy Ti6Al4V micro-lattice structures for the production of lightweight components. Specifically, the pillar textile unit cell is used as base lattice structure and alternative lattice topologies including reinforcing vertical bars are also considered. Detailed characterizations of dimensional accuracy, surface ro...
