Physical models of wave propagation or mechanical vibrations are becoming increasingly important for the design of algorithms for sound reproduction and sound synthesis. For sound reproduction, wave field synthesis has been established as a physically well-founded method for determining the loudspeaker driving signals of massive multichannel systems [1, 2]. On the other hand, algorithmic models...
An outline of a hybrid approach to the synthesis of percussion sounds. The synthesis method described here combines techniques and concepts from physical modeling and convolution to produce audio synthesis of percussive instruments. This synthesis method not only achieves a high degree of realism in comparison to audio samples but also retains some of the flexibility associated with waveguide p...
Power is widely considered the only real limiter for Moore’s Law in the next decade [Gelsinger, 2004]. Indeed, IBM CTO B. Meyerson has claimed that CMOS process scaling has already stopped between 130nm and 90nm due to power limitations [Clarke, 2004]. Existing methods for physical synthesis, however, have primarily targeted timing closure and are inadequate to meet the challenge of low-power p...
We have prepared the newly discovered Fe-based superconducting material LaO1−xFxFeAs (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) in polycrystalline form and have investigated the samples by means of structural, thermodynamic and transport measurements. Our investigations reveal a non superconducting phase at 0 ≤ x . 0.04 which for x = 0 is characterized by a structural transition towards an orthorhombic distortion at Ts ≈ 1...
Physical synthesis is a relatively young field in Electronic Design Automation. Many published optimizations for physical synthesis end up hurting the quality of the final design, often because they neglect important physical aspects of the layout, such as long wires or routing congestion. Our work defines and explores the concept of physical safeness and evaluates empirically its impact on rou...
A physical modelling music synthesis system known as ‘Cymatic’ is described that enables ‘virtual instruments’ to be controlled in real-time via a force-feedback joystick and a force-feedback mouse. These serve to provide the user with gestural controllers whilst in addition giving tactile feedback to the user. Cymatic virtual instruments are set up via a graphical user interface in a manner th...

This paper deals with designing material parameters for physical models. It is shown that the characteristic relation between modal frequencies and damping factors of a sound object is the acoustic invariant of the material from which the body is made. Thus, such characteristic relation can be used for designing damping models for a conservative physical model to represent a particular material.
This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 17201 “Formal Synthesis of Cyber-Physical Systems.” Formal synthesis is the application of algorithmic techniques based on automata and logic to the design of controllers for hybrid systems in which continuous components interact with discrete ones. The Dagstuhl seminar brought together researchers from control theory and fr...
Despite enjoying the resulting freedom from physical constraints that can result from the incorporation of computer technology in electronic musical instruments as musicians are enabled to push back the creative boundaries within which they work, musicians are still searching for virtual instruments that come closer to their physical counterparts in terms of their playing experience. This paper...
