Highly photoluminescent gold nanodots (Au NDs) via etching and co-deposition of hybridized ligands [11-mercaptoundecanol (11-MU) and its complexes with amphiphilic ligands] on gold nanoparticles (∼3 nm) have been prepared and employed for the detection of nitrite based on the analyte-induced photoluminescence quenching.

We report that nanoscale carbon particles (carbon dots) upon simple surface passivation are strongly photoluminescent in both solution and the solid state. The luminescence emission of the carbon dots is stable against photobleaching, and there is no blinking effect. These strongly emissive carbon dots may find applications similar to or beyond those of their widely pursued silicon counterparts.

Amphiphilic biodegradable photoluminescent polymers (ABPLPs) composed of a biodegradable fluorescent polymer and methoxy poly (ethyleneglycol) demonstrate intrinsic bright, tunable, and stable fluorescence emission. ABPLP micelles elicit minor cellular toxicity and can be used for cell and tissue imaging both in vitro and in vivo.

Highly photoluminescent carbon dots with a PL quantum yield of 26% have been prepared in one step by hydrothermal treatment of orange juice. Due to high photostability and low toxicity these carbon dots are demonstrated as excellent probes in cellular imaging.

Novel, photoluminescent and translucent construction elements are considered for application on buildings’ envelope toward energy savings avant-garde architectural expression. These allow natural light to pass through the charge materials, which their turn re-emit as visible light. By exploiting intrinsic characteristics of these large amounts could be saved in lighting applications. This work ...

By simply doping the conventional light-emitting polymer F8BT with a helically chiral aromatic molecule, it is shown that substantial levels of CP-electroluminescence can be generated directly. Both photoluminescent and electroluminescent emission from the polymer are observed to become circularly polarized, with the sign of the CP emission directly determined by the handedness of the dopant.

A novel and facile approach for preparing hydrophilic carbogenic dots (CDs) has been developed with mesoporous silica spheres as nanoreactors by using an impregnation method. The resulting highly efficient photoluminescent CDs without any further treatment are monodisperse, photostable and of low toxicity, and show excellent luminescence properties.

An unprecedented octahedral {Cd(30)} nanocage supported by twelve pendant-armed tetraacetate macrocyclic ligands was synthesized through the reaction of macrocyclic tetraethyl ester and Cd(OAc)(2)·2H(2)O in a 1 : 2 stoichiometry, where the surface photovoltage and photoluminescent properties have been studied for the nanocage.

A novel Föster resonance energy transfer (FRET) immunoassay based on persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNP) was established for prostate specific antigen (PSA) detection in serum and cell extracts without in situ excitation. The specific FRET behavior allows highly selective and sensitive ratiometric photoluminescent detection of PSA in biological samples.

A new polymerization technique that allows for the first-ever synthesis of poly(phenylenedicyanovinylene)s (PPCN2Vs) is described. PPCN2Vs, with their high electron affinities and structural versatility, seem ideally suited to address the need for new n-type polymers. Remarkably the polymers presented herein become more photoluminescent, in the thin film, under continuous irradiation.
