The cells of the parathyroid gland secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which plays a pivotal role in maintaining circulating levels of ionized calcium (Ca2þ) within a narrow physiological range. The main actions of PTH include (i) releasing calcium and phosphorus from bone, (ii) decreasing renal calcium excretion, (iii) increasing urinary phosphorus excretion and (iv) stimulating renal productio...

Water clear cell parathyroid adenoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. In this rare disease entity, normal parathyroid tissue is replaced with growth of water-clear cells, instead of the chief cell hyperplasia associated with the majority of parathyroid adenomas. We present the case of a water clear cell parathyroid adenoma in a 54 year old woman with symptomatic hypercalcemia, as...

Key words: hyperparathyroidism-radionuclide-imaging; primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism [1–3]. With hyperplastic parathyroid glands tetrofosmin hyperplasia; Technetium-99m-diagnostic use; tetrofosmin imaging gives an overall sensitivity of 84% and a specificity of 75%, higher than those of Tc-99m sestam-ibi, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging Renal history [1–2]. The former h...

The case of a 65 year old female with myasthenia gravis and hypercalcaemia is presented. Failure of medical control of the myasthenia necessitated thymectomy at which time parathyroid exploration was also carried out. This revealed parathyroid hyperplasia and a thymoma. This association has not been previously documented in the literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE 4D-CT is a novel method of multiphase CT imaging. When used to localize parathyroid adenomas and hyperplasia, this technique may allow for more robust diagnostic accuracy than traditional sonography and nuclear scintigraphy techniques. The purpose of our study is to assess the accuracy of 4D-CT for localizing pathologically proved parathyroid adenomas and hyperplasia foun...

Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder that presents with renal tumors, pulmonary cysts with spontaneous pneumothoraces, and skin hamartomas. We present a case of a 67-year-old female with multiple endocrinopathies and a history of BHD syndrome. In 2011, a thyroidectomy with a four-gland parathyroidectomy was performed for toxic multinodular goiter (TMNG) and parathyroi...

Hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands and increased concentrations of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone are among the earlier alterations of mineral metabolism in patients with chronic renal failure. In the past five years several investigators have demonstrated that phosphorus retention plays a key role in the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism and chief cell hyperplasia of the para...

Two families with hereditary hyperparathyroidism are described. One member of each family developed a parathyroid carcinoma. In one case this recurred locally and metastasised. This patient showed hyperplasia of one of the three other parathyroid glands. It is possible that the different parathyroid lesions found in familial hyperparathyroidism may be the result of a progression from hyperplasi...
