We develop a probabilistic approach for accurate network modeling using node popularities within the framework of the mixed-membership stochastic blockmodel (MMSB). Our model integrates two basic properties of nodes in social networks: homophily and preferential connection to popular nodes. We develop a scalable algorithm for posterior inference, based on a novel nonconjugate variant of stochas...

Social network analysis and social network visualizations can provide a meaningful statistical and topological understanding of latent communities. However, the majority of current visualization approaches just represent sub-communities as clusters of closely related nodes in a node-link diagram and embed limitations to represent overlapping communities and multi-layer community structure frequ...

Complex networks with community structures are ubiquitous in the real world. Despite many approaches developed for detecting communities, we continue to lack tools for identifying overlapping and bridging nodes that play crucial roles in the interactions and communications among communities in complex networks. Here we develop an algorithm based on the local flow conservation to effectively and...

Understanding the underlying community structure is an important challenge in social network analysis. Most state-of-the-art algorithms only consider structural properties to detect disjoint subcommunities and do not include the fact that people can belong to more than one community and also ignore the information contained in posts that users have made. To tackle this problem, we developed a n...

We present a new algorithm for community detection. The algorithm uses random walks to embed the graph in a space of measures, after which a modification of k-means in that space is applied. The algorithm is therefore fast and easily parallelizable. We evaluate the algorithm on standard random graph benchmarks, including some overlapping community benchmarks, and find its performance to be bett...

Although community discovery based on social network analysis has been studied extensively in the Web hyperlink environment, limited research has been done in the case of named entities in text documents. The cooccurrence of entities in documents usually implies some connections among them. Investigating such connections can reveal important patterns. In this paper, we mine communities among na...

We define an approach to identify overlapping communities in multiplex networks, extending the popular clique percolation method for simple graphs. The extension requires to rethink the basic concepts on which the clique percolation algorithm is based, including cliques and clique adjacency, to allow the presence of multiple types of edges.

In this paper, we use a partition of the links of a network in order to uncover its community structure. This approach allows for communities to overlap at nodes so that nodes may be in more than one community. We do this by making a node partition of the line graph of the original network. In this way we show that any algorithm that produces a partition of nodes can be used to produce a partit...

Community detection in complex networks is a fundamental data analysis task in various domains, and how to effectively find overlapping communities in real applications is still a challenge. In this work, we propose a new unified model and method for finding the best overlapping communities on the basis of the associated node and link partitions derived from the same framework. Specifically, we...

Identification of communities in complex networks is an important topic and issue in many fields such as sociology, biology, and computer science. Communities are often defined as groups of related nodes or links that correspond to functional subunits in the corresponding complex systems. While most conventional approaches have focused on discovering communities of nodes, some recent studies st...
