In order to exploit the flexibility of OpenMP in parallelizing large scale multi-physics applications where different modes of parallelism are needed for efficient computation, it is first necessary to be able to...

OpenMP is a relatively new programming paradigm, which can easily deliver good parallel performance for small numbers (<16) of processors. Success with more processors is more difficult to produce. MPI is a relatively mature programming paradigm, and there have been many reports of highly-scalable MPI codes for large numbers (hundreds, even thousands) of processors. In this paper, we explore th...

The advent of the Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC) chip in the many-core realm imposes challenges to programmers. From a programmer’s perspective is desirable to use the shared memory paradigm, employing high-level parallel programming abstractions such as OpenMP. In this paper we discuss our ongoing efforts to support OpenMP on SCC. Specifically, we focus on the following three key aspects in ...

The geophysics group at CRS4 has long developed echo reconstruction codes in HPF on distributed-memory machines. Now, however, with the arrival of shared-memory machines and their native OpenMP compilers, the transfer to OpenMP would seem to present the logical next step in our code development strategy. Recent experience with porting one of our important HPF codes to OpenMP does not bear this ...

The HYDRO mini-application has been successfully used as a research vehicle in previous PRACE projects [6]. In this paper, we evaluate the benefits of the tasking model introduced in recent OpenMP standards [9]. We have developed a new version of HYDRO using the concept of OpenMP tasks and this implementation is compared to already existing and optimized OpenMP versions of HYDRO.

We present an approach to hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization in FETIDP methods using OpenMP with PETSc in the finite element assembly and using the shared memory parallel direct solver Pardiso in the FETI-DP solution phase. Our approach thus uses OpenMP parallelization on subdomains and MPI in between subdomains. We investigate the efficiency of this approach for a benchmark problem from two dim...

Writing irregular parallel algorithms with OpenMP has been rarely practised in the past. Yet it is possible, and in this paper we will use a simple breadth–first search application as an example to show a possible stepping stone and deficiency of the OpenMP specification: It is very difficult to cancel the threads in a parallel region. A way to work around the issue within the existing OpenMP s...

This paper discusses the implementation of the new OpenMP standard for Fortran shared memory parallel processing in Programming Environment Release 3.1 for Cray PVP systems. Similarities and differences between OpenMP and Autotasking compiler directives, environment variables and other control mechanisms are discussed. It becomes clear that OpenMP provides equivalents for all of the essential f...
