AIMS The main aims of this work were the study of cork slabs moulds colonization and the evaluation of the moulds diversity during cork processing steps, in different cork stoppers factories. Simultaneously, it was envisaged to perform an evaluation of the air quality. METHODS AND RESULTS Moulds were isolated and identified from cork slabs and cork samples in four cork stoppers factories. The...

Fungal spores are known as one of the important bioparticles causing allergic manifestation in human beings. Hence, knowledge of season and prevalence of the airborne allergens to which the patients are exposed is a prerequisite for proper diagnosis and treatment of allergic disorders in hypersensitive individuals. Keeping this in view, aerial survey was performed in the atmosphere of Rohtak ci...

We report the elucidation of the complete genome of the Neurospora crassa (Shear and Dodge) strain FGSC 73, a mat-a, trp-3 mutant strain. The genome sequence around the idiotypic mating type locus represents the only publicly available sequence for a mat-a strain. 40.42 Megabases are assembled into 358 scaffolds carrying 11,978 gene models.

Neurospora has been a successful eukaryotic model organism for addressing a wide range of biological questions under laboratory conditions. This success was a result of early domestication of the organism for rigorous experimentation. As a result of concerted efforts by many excellent researchers for over a century, there has been enormous amount of genetic resources collected and generated for...

Peritonitis is a frequent complication in peritoneal dialysis. It may be caused by contamination of the dialysis tubing or by extension of the catheter exit site. Gram-positive bacteria are the most common organism, accounting for 60% of all documented cases of continuous ambulatorial peritonitis dialysis. Fungi are isolated from to 1-15% of cases. Forty-nine out of 490 bottles containing fluid...

The circadian clock evolved under entraining conditions, yet most circadian experiments and much circadian theory are built around free-running rhythms. The interpretation of entrainment experiments is certainly more complex than that of free-running rhythms due to the relationship between exogenous and endogenous cycles. Here, we systematically describe entrainment in the simplest of the tradi...

Investigation of the red bread mold that contaminated French bakeries nearly two centuries ago has led to a wealth of discoveries that have impacted our understanding of genetic, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms in microbes, from Mendelian genetics and the gene-enzyme relationship to circadian rhythm and plant cell wall degradation. Early Neurospora research focused on elucidating mechanis...

Priatni S. 2014. Review: Potential production of carotenoids from Neurospora. Nusantara Bioscience 6: 63-68. Carotenoids are abundant and widely distributed in plants, animals and microorganisms. Commercial use of carotenoids competes between microorganisms and synthetic manufacture. Carotenoids production can be increased by improving the efficiency of carotenoid synthesis in microbes. Some of...

The genera Neurospora and Gelasinospora are conventionally distinguished by differences in ascospore ornamentation, with elevated longitudinal ridges (ribs) separated by depressed grooves (veins) in Neurospora and spherical or oval indentations (pits) in Gelasinospora. The phylogenetic relationships of representatives of 12 Neurospora and 4 Gelasinospora species were assessed with the DNA seque...

Understanding the Barriers to Interspecific Hybridization in Neurospora. (May 2012) Sameer Rajendra Gajjar Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics Texas A&M University Research Advisor: Dr. Rodolfo Aramayo Department of Biology Crosses between two species of Neurospora are typically sterile and result in the production of non-viable or few viable ascospores. It is unclear what prevents succes...
