We present an electron energy loss study using energy filtered TEM of spatially resolved surface plasmon excitations on a silver nanorod of aspect ratio 14.2 resting on a 30 nm thick silicon nitride membrane. Our results show that the excitation is quantized as resonant modes whose intensity maxima vary along the nanorod's length and whose wavelength becomes compressed towards the ends of the n...

A novel gas ionization sensor using Pd nanoparticle-capped ZnO (Pd/ZnO) nanorods as the anode is proposed. The Pd/ZnO nanorod-based sensors, compared with the bare ZnO nanorod, show lower breakdown voltage for the detected gases with good sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, the sensors exhibit stable performance after more than 200 tests for both inert and active gases. The simple, low-cost,...

UNLABELLED Ordered ZnO nanorod array/p-GaN heterojunction light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been fabricated by introducing graphene as the current spreading layer, which exhibit improved electroluminescence performance by comparison to the LED using a conventional structure (indium-tin-oxide as the current spreading layer). In addition, by adjusting the diameter of ZnO nanorod array in use, the...

We quantify the extreme heating associated with resonant irradiation of individual gold nanorods by using a novel assay based on partitioning of lipophilic dyes between membrane phases. The temperature increase is sensitively dependent on the angle between the laser polarization and the orientation of the nanorod. A dramatic and irreversible decrease in the heating of a nanorod occurs at high-i...

Local restructuring of metallic nanorod arrays and the fabrication of metallodielectric microstructures using direct femtosecond laser writing technologies have been studied. Femtosecond laser ablation has demonstrated the possibility to create sharp boundaries down to a single nanorod on the nanorod array. Polymer structures on the nanorods can be used to control the resonance wavelengths and ...

Seeking plasmonic nanostructures with large field confinement and enhancement is significant for photonic and electronic nanodevices with high sensitivity, reproducibility, and tunability. Here, we report the synthesis of plasmonic arrays composed of two-segment dimer nanorods and coaxial cable nanorods with ∼1 nm gap insulated by a self-assembled Raman molecule monolayer. The gap-induced plasm...

Bridged ZnO nanorod arrays on a V-grooved Si(100) substrate were used as the photoanode of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell for water splitting. Photolithography followed by reactive ion etching was employed to create a V-grooved structure on a Si substrate. ZnO nanorod arrays were grown via a hydrothermal method. The light trapping and PEC properties are greatly enhanced using the bridged ZnO...

A seeded heteroepitaxial growth of ZnO nanorods selectively on TiO(2) nanorod tips was achieved by restricting crystal growth on highly hydrophobic TiO(2) nanorod film surfaces. Intriguing light harvesting performance and efficient charge transport efficiency has been found, which suggest potential applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

A novel one-step coating and assembly approach for fabricating well-defined ZnO nanodot/SiO₂ nanorod arrays by hydrolysis-recrystallization growth from 1-D ZnO nanorods is described. The resultant composite nanorod arrays exhibit much enhanced UV emission efficiencies and excellent stability, and thus offer particular promise for application in UV emission devices operating in harsh environments.

While great success has been achieved in fine-tuning the aspect ratios and thereby the plasmon resonances of cylindrical Au nanorods, facet control with atomic level precision on the highly curved nanorod surfaces has long been a significantly more challenging task. The intrinsic structural complexity and lack of precise facet control of the nanorod surfaces remain the major obstacles for the a...
