Monodisperse multifunctional MnFe2O4/dye/silica core/shell nanoparticles have been designed and developed. The magnetic cores act as nano-heaters in biological systems under RF field excitation and the encapsulated dyes work as local temperature probes. The silica shells enable the water-solubility and biocompatibility of the NPs and protect the encapsulated fluorophores from photobleaching.

Within the frame of a simple, long-wavelength, quasi-static description, we present theoretical characterization optical response metal nanoparticles doped with active gain elements in core-shell (metallic core within an dielectric shell) and nano-shell (active metallic configurations. The common feature these structures is that, adding to system produces increase quality plasmon resonance, whi...

Silver nanoparticles offer highly attractive properties for many applications, however concern has been raised over the possible toxicity of this material in environmental systems. While it is thought that the release of Ag(+) can play a crucial role in this toxicity, the mechanism by which the oxidative dissolution of nano-silver occurs is not yet understood. Here we address this through the e...

In this work, nano-photocatalysts based on ZnS quantum dots (QD) functionalized by chitosan were developed using “green” colloidal chemical process in aqueous media at room temperature. The ZnS/chitosan nano-photocatalysts were extensively characterized and the results demonstrated that chitosan was an effective capping ligand for the direct production of water-soluble ZnS QDs with average nano...

Owning to their unparalleled sensitivity resolution, nanomechanical resonators have excellent capabilities in design of nano-sensors for gas detection. The current challenge is to develop newdesigns of the resonators for differentiating distinct gas atoms with a recognizably high sensitivity. In this work, the characteristics of impulse wave propagation in carbon nanotube-based sensors are inve...

Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation in a suspension system requires a sophisticated nano-device that combines a photon absorber with effective redox catalysts. This study demonstrates an innovative molecular linking strategy for fabricating photocatalytic materials that allow effective charge separation of excited carriers, followed by efficient hydrogen evolution. The method for the s...
