In order to generate marked insertions in the myxobacterium Sorangium cellulosum, a transposon based on the eukaryotic mariner transposon was developed. The transposition frequency was increased with the use of a mutated tnp gene. The transposon randomly inserts into the chromosome, as demonstrated by targeted mutagenesis of the epoK gene.

In 1922 Davis described an infectious disease which was responsible for heavy mortalities in a number of species of warm water fishes in the Mississippi Valley. Although Davis was unsuccessful in his attempts to cultivate the etiological agent, he reported that large numbers of slender, motile bacteria were characteristically present in the lesions of infected fish. He further noted that when m...

Haliangicin is a beta-methoxyacrylate-type polyene antibiotic isolated from the unique marine myxobacterium Haliangium ochraceum. A further investigation of the extract of this microorganism has resulted in the isolation of haliangicin as well as its geometrical isomers. The configuration of the epoxide in haliangicin, which was unknown previously, was determined in this study. The planar struc...

Scanning electron microscopy was used to follow fruiting body formation by pure cultures of Chondromyces crocatus M38 and Stigmatella aurantica. Vegetative cells were grown on SP agar and then transferred to Bonner salts agar for fructification. Fruiting in both species commences with the formation of aggregation centers which resemble a fried egg in appearance. In Chondromyces the elevated cen...

Myxococcus fulvus HW-1 (ATCC BAA-855) is a halotolerant marine myxobacterium. This strain exhibits complex social behaviors in the presence of low concentrations of seawater but adopts an asocial living pattern under oceanic conditions. The whole genome of M. fulvus HW-1 will enable us to further investigate the details of its evolution.

A new natural saframycin was discovered in the culture broth of the myxobacterium, Myxococcus xanthus strain Mx x48. The fermentation and isolation of the antibiotic are described. The name, saframycin Mx1, is proposed. The compound appears to interact with cellular DNA.
