A gold nanorod-locked nucleic acid nano-biosensor for dynamic single-cell gene expression analysis in living cells and tissues is developed. The nanoparticle facilitates endocytic delivery and dynamic monitoring of the gene expression in human umbilical cord endothelial cells, mouse skin tissues, mouse retina tissues, and mouse cornea tissues at the single-cell level.

Background: Toxoplasma gondii, as an important food-borne protozoan parasite, occurs widely in humans and animals including domestic poultry throughout the world. The goal of this survey was to determine prevalence rate of T. gondii in free-ranging chickens sold in Tunis, Tunisia. Methods: In the present study, the prevalence of T. gondii in 40 free-range chickens (Gallus domesticus) marketed ...

Background: Acinetobacter baumannii is an important pathogen in health care and is responsible for severe nosocomial and community-acquired pneumonia. To design novel therapeutic agents, a mouse model for A. baumannii pneumonia is essential. Methods: We described a mouse model of A. baumannii using clinical and 19606R standard strains for developing a quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) for ra...

PTEN is a tumor suppressor gene mutated in many human sporadic cancers and in hereditary cancer syndromes such as Cowden disease, Bannayan-Zonana syndrome and Lhermitte-Duclos disease. The major substrate of PTEN is PIP3, a second messenger molecule produced following PI3K activation induced by variety of stimuli. PIP3 activates the serine-threonine kinase PKB/Akt which is involved in anti-apop...

It has recently been shown that visceral yolk-sac endoderm is derived from the primitive endoderm of the 4.5-day mouse blastocyst (Gardner & Papaioannou, 1975; Gardner & Rossant, 1979). During development, primitive endodermal cells acquire nuclei with more than four times the haploid amount of DNA. The finding of metaphases with multiple sets of chromosomes suggests that the diploid precursors...

A polyclonal antiserum to a microtubule-associated protein (MAP) from mouse neuroblastoma cells (MAP 4) was used to examine the distribution of this protein in mouse tissues. Immunoblots of neuroblastoma cell microtubule protein preparations demonstrated that the antiserum reacted with a triplet of proteins at 215,000-240,000 mol wt. Antibodies affinity purified from any of the bands showed cro...

Circadian rhythms are generated by the oscillating expression of the Per1 and Per2 genes, which are expressed not only in the central brain pacemaker but also in peripheral tissues. Hormones are likely to coordinate physiological function in time. We performed in situ hybridization to localize mPer1 and mPer2 mRNA to particular cell types and tissue compartments in adrenal, thyroid, and testis....
