A heterologous cluster of glycosyltransferase genes was identified in the three Moraxella catarrhalis LOS serotype strains. Multiple PCR primers designed to this region amplified products that differentiate between the serotypes more rapidly and efficiently than previously described serological analyses. This assay will be valuable for clinical and research-based studies.
A prospective clinical cohort study was established to investigate the humoral immune response in middle ear fluids (MEF) and serum against bacterial surface proteins in children suffering from recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) and chronic otitis media with effusion (COME), using Luminex xMAP technology. The association between the humoral immune response and the presence of Moraxella catarrh...
To determine the bacterial etiology of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in Turkey, quantitative cultures of sputum were carried out. The major pathogens for LTRIs were found to be Haemophilus influenzae, followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis. Only 6.1% of the H. inlfuenzae and all strains of M. catarrhalis were beta-lactamase producers. An E-test showed that 3...
Immune evasion of Moraxella catarrhalis involves ubiquitous surface protein A-dependent C3d binding.
The complement system plays an important role in eliminating invading pathogens. Activation of complement results in C3b deposition (opsonization), phagocytosis, anaphylatoxin (C3a, C5a) release, and consequently cell lysis. Moraxella catarrhalis is a human respiratory pathogen commonly found in children with otitis media and in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The species has...
background: otitis media with effusion is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in children. effective treatment of effusion in the middle ear requires appropriate empirical treatment and characterization of responsible pathogens. objective of the present study was to detect pathogens in clinical samples from patients with otitis media with effusion in our area and to determine the sensitiv...
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing was performed on a retrospective set of 129 Moraxella catarrhalis isolates obtained over a 20 month period from 70 children admitted to, or presenting at, the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The mean age of the children (at the end of the study) was 2.5 years, with a range of 6 months to 15 years. Fifty-one different M. cata...
Moraxella catarrhalis ubiquitous surface protein (Usp) A1 has been reported to bind fibronectin and is involved in adherence. In this study, using M. catarrhalis mutants derived from clinical isolates, we show that both UspA1 and UspA2 bind fibronectin. Recombinant truncated UspA1/A2 proteins, together with smaller fragments spanning the entire molecule, were tested for binding to fibronectin. ...
