High velocity accidents can lead to major injuries - long bone fractures, abdominal trauma, pelvic fractures and chest injuries. These injuries can act as distracting factors during the initial assessment of a polytrauma patient and innocuous but significant smaller injuries can be missed. We present a rare case of isolated anterolateral radial head dislocation in a polytrauma patient.
BACKGROUND Limb amputation due to lower extremity arterial injury is not uncommon and multilevel arterial injury is even more limb-threatening and easily missed with potentially devastating consequences. There is limited information on multilevel arterial injuries. PURPOSE We undertook a review of our experience to gain insight on multilevel arterial injury patterns associated with lower extr...
Editorial Comment Kunkle et al. report on their experience with missed ureteral injuries at a busy inner city trauma center. This is a well written and comprehensive paper on delayed diagnosis. Tables 3 and 4 are nice metanalyses demonstrating that roughly 11% of ureteral injuries are missed at laparotomy, resulting in an overall nephrectomy rate of 18% and death at 13%. Even in the busiest of ...
Carpal bone fractures make up a significant proportion of injuries to the wrist. The complex bone shape and articulations make diagnosis more difficult and missed injuries more common. This article reviews carpal bone fractures excluding the scaphoid.
BACKGROUND Cervical spine injuries are the most commonly missed severe injuries with serious implications for the patient and physician. The diagnosis of subluxations or spinal cord injuries in the absence of vertebral fractures, especially in unevaluable patients, poses a major challenge. The objective of this study was to study the incidence and type of cervical spine trauma according to mech...

BACKGROUND Increasing participation by women in Australian football (AF) has made understanding their specific injury prevention needs a priority. In other sports, men and women have different injury profiles. This study aims to provide the first overview of self-reported injuries in women's AF. METHODS Nationwide survey of women aged 17+ years who played in an AF competition was conducted fo...
Background: Bladder and urethral injuries associated with pelvic fractures are uncommon and are missed at initial assessment in up to 23% of cases. Missed lower urinary tract injuries have a significant impact on patient morbidity, if not identified early. This study aims to associate mechanisms of traumatic pelvic ring fractures with bladder and/or urethral injuries to determine factors that m...
