Data are presented on faecal water losses in 93 preterm infants being fed breast milk (72 infant days) or formula (280 days). Losses per kg increased to 4 weeks, when they amounted to 11% of water requirement in infants fed breast milk and 8% in infants fed formula.

A clinical and biochemical evaluation has been made of a new milk formula, Modified Carnation milk (MCM), based on cows' milk but with the mineral content and concentration of caloric nutrients altered to make it correspond more closely to human milk. MCM produced higher plasma calcium and magnesium concentrations in 6-day-old infants than those produced by unmodified evaporated and dried milks...

To study pancreas enzyme content regulation when the diet was modified in suckling goats, a comparison was made between kids fed a milk replacer and ones fed maternal milk. A total of 25 preruminant Granadina breed goats were bottle-fed a milk replacer ad libitum from postnatal days 3 to 28 (until the age of 3 days kids had been fed colostrum). Body weight, pancreas weight, total protein concen...

Thirty-eight one day old female Holstein Friesian calves were raised on artificial rearing system. We are used in completely randomized design to evaluate the effects of using milk replacer on body growth and its economic feasibility. The results revealed that the pre-weaning weight gain, pre-weaning growth rate, weaning weight, post weaning growth rate and weight at final week (week twenty) of...

Plasma amino acids were measured in 35 preterm infants, of whom 11 weighed less than 1000 g and 24 weighed between 1000 g and 1500 g at the time of sampling. Repeat samples were obtained in 18 at least seven days later. Seventeen infants were fed with preterm formula milk and 18 with expressed maternal breast milk at one to two hourly intervals during the study period. Formula fed infants gaine...

Significant benefits to infant host defense, sensory-neural development, gastrointestinal maturation, and some aspects of nutritional status are observed when premature infants are fed their mothers' own milk. A reduction in infection-related morbidity in human milk-fed premature infants has been reported in nearly a dozen descriptive, and a few quasi-randomized, studies in the past 25 years. H...

Park' reports the case of a breast-fed infant which, at the age of six weeks was given a little cow's milk and which, after three or four hours, vomited, became collapsed, and later had diarrhcea. The child was desensitized by the mouth with gradually increasing doses beginning with 0.0001 c.cm. until large quantities of milk could be tolerated. Weill2 had a similar case which was cured by subc...

Members of the genus Bifidobacterium are abundant in the stool of most human infants during the initial exclusively milk-fed period of life, especially at an age of 2–3 months (Harmsen et al., 2000; Favier et al., 2002; Mariat et al., 2009; Coppa et al., 2011; Turroni et al., 2012; Yatsunenko et al., 2012; Tannock et al., 2013; Barrett et al., 2015). Bifidobacteria dominate the stool microbiota...

The objective of the current study was to examine the effect of pasteurization of waste milk, used to feed dairy calves, on the bacterial diversity of their lower gut. Using 16S rDNA bacterial tag-encoded FLX amplicon pyrosequencing, fecal samples from dairy calves, ages 1 wk to 6 mo old and fed either pasteurized or nonpasteurized waste milk, were analyzed for bacterial diversity. Calves were ...

The use of alternative proteins in milk replacer has been evaluated for their ability to decrease the cost of milk replacers without negatively impacting performance of the calf. Three studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of calves fed milk replacer utilizing liquid egg as an alternative protein and to determine the optimal concentration of liquid egg to include in milk replacers....
