Laboratory experiments investigated the comparative degradation of six organophosphorus insecticides in soil as affected by enhanced microbial degradation. The degradation rates and product distributions of chlorpyrifos, fonofos, ethoprop, terbufos, and phorate were not dramatically altered in soils containing microbial populations adapted to rapidly degrade isofenphos. An Arthrobacter sp. isol...

An in vitro procedure was developed to estimate rate and extent of ruminal protein degradation using [15N]H3 to quantify uptake of protein degradation products for microbial protein synthesis. Incubations were conducted for 6 h in stirrer flasks with ruminal inoculum plus buffer, reducing solution, pectin, soluble carbohydrates, and added (15NH4)2SO4. Seven protein concentrates were tested in t...

The fate of fuel releases largely depends on the poorly-understood response in microbial community structure and function. Here, we evaluate the impacts to the microbial community resulting from a pilot-scale continuous release (10 months) of a 10% v:v ethanol solution mixed with benzene and toluene (50 mg/L each). Microbial population shifts were characterized by pyrosequencing-based 16S rRNA ...

the expansion of a microbial bank for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pahs) is crucial for removal of these persistent pollutants. in this study, five gram-negative, aerobic, non-fermentative bacterial strains (iii-r3, iv-p11, iv-p13, iv-r13, and v-p18) were isolated from the activated sludge of a petrochemical wastewater treatment plant using enrichment pro tocol based on...

background: the presence of chemical compounds has different effects on the rate of degradation of materials and on changing dominant microorganisms in the biological degradation processes. these effects are related to the type and concentration of compounds. this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of glucose as a growth substrate on phenol removal efficiency and micro...

Microbial decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC) in thawing Arctic permafrost is important in determining greenhouse gas feedbacks of tundra ecosystems to climate. However, the changes in microbial community structure during SOC decomposition are poorly known. Here we examine these changes using frozen soils from Barrow, Alaska, USA, in anoxic microcosm incubation at -2 and 8°C for 122 days...

We report the soil microbial diversity and functional aspects related to degradation of recalcitrant compounds, determined using a metagenomic approach, in a landfill lysimeter prepared with soil from Ghazipur landfill site, New Delhi, India. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence and functional diversity of complex microbial communities responsible for waste degradation.

Chilling of whole rumen contents prior to preparation of strained rumen fluid enriched with particle-associated microorganisms resulted in rumen inoculum with the highest microbial dry weight, total bacterial counts, and degradation rates for casein and soybean meal. Strained rumen fluid, whole rumen contents blended with strained rumen fluid, chilled strained rumen fluid, and strained rumen fl...
