In this study, we used a novel cognitive paradigm and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates involved in processing three different types of sentences. Participants read either metaphoric (Some surgeons are butchers), literal (Some surgeons are fathers), or non-meaningful sentences (Some surgeons are shelves) and had to decide whether ...

Following Almor’s (1999) cost-function analysis of referential processing, we hypothesized that reading times of metaphoric anaphors are affected by readers’ working memory ability and reflect a balance between discourse function and processing cost. The results from two self paced reading experiments supported this hypothesis. Low span participants always read sentences with metaphoric anaphor...

This study examines the processing of metaphoric reference by bilingual speakers. English dominant, Spanish dominant, and balanced bilinguals read passages in English biasing either a figurative (e.g., describing a weak and soft fighter that always lost and everyone hated) or a literal (e.g., describing a donut and bakery shop that made delicious pastries) meaning of a critical metaphoric refer...

Abstract This paper explores the link between metaphoric structure TIME IS SPACE and time perception in bilinguals. While there appear to be fundamental commonalities way humans perceive experience regardless of language background, language-specific spatiotemporal metaphors can give rise differences populations, under certain conditions. Little is known, however, about how bilinguals time, spe...

Metaphor is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also reflects the concept projection between source and target domains in human cognition. Previous sequence tagging-based metaphor identification methods could model projection, resulting limitation that outputs of these models are unexplainable predictions metaphoricity labels. In this work, we propose first explainable model, inspired by Conce...

This paper explores the informationtheoretic measure entropy to detect metaphoric change, transferring ideas from hypernym detection to research on language change. We also build the first diachronic test set for German as a standard for metaphoric change annotation. Our model shows high performance, is unsupervised, language-independent and generalizable to other processes of semantic change.

In his reply to my article, Raymond Gibbs provides further information about the thinking underlying claims for metaphoric representation. As he points out, I was not able to review some of the theoretical rationale underlying claims for metaphoric thought, such as the issue of embodiment. He also describes further empirical evidence for the notion of metaphoric concepts. To summarize my rebutt...
